About the shot:

The trick was to create the reflections and capture the boats as steady as possible.
settings used:
Aperture = f/4
Exposure = 3 sec
Tripod = Yes
ISO = 100

Now why didn't I use ISO 400 instead of 100? that would give me a faster speed. The answer is simple, the reflections couldn't be made smooth enough, and the noise would be visible.
It might my 400 ISO level be noiseless during the day, but in night things are a little different.

A few notes about ISO:
----------------------
ISO level is useful for handheld fast captures in low light conditions or in sports where a fast speed is required (1/2000) while a tripod can hardly be used. The more ISO you increase the fastest speed you get, but that is costing on quality.
Colour (green/red) artifacts and dots or NOISE as you have probably heard is being created in high ISO levels.
Thats is happening because the sensor is trying to gather all the information as fast as each ISO level permits and the sensitivity of the sensor drops the quality especially in low light conditions.
dSLR Cameras with large sensors such as APS-C (22.2 x 14.8 mm) or APS-H (28.7 x 18.7 mm) and Full frame (36 x 24 mm) sensors, produce lower noise levels than compact cameras.
The biggest the sensor is, the lowest noise and the better quality you get.
Cameras such Canon 5D or 1Ds mark II or III, are completely noiseless at 1600 ISO levels, and produce low noise even at 3200!!!
Beside the noise large sensors offer better quality cause they are gathering more information about the light such as (light range or dynamic range - whitest to gray, or more light gradual levels) and more details in each scene.
Don't get confused with megapixels a dSLR with 6 megapixel may produce better images rather a compact in 9 megapixel.
Megapixels have to do with size, NOT quality!

RAW Post Processing Notes:

I couldn't see well from the viewfinder so I made some rotation corrections,
- White balance crazy (so sky could look cold, and the rest of the scene warm)
- Saturation psycho, (to enhance a little bit) :P
- Sky selection smoothen (Neat Image)
- and my usual Frame, Title and JPEG optimization

A magnifficent array of light and colour, the exposure time was perfect to clearly capture all the beautiful stillness and reflections. The contrsting gold light paired with the blue hue sky is the perfect match to create that quiet evening mood.

Hi Stelios

Impressive night view with sharp clarity and great night light and superb reflections.

Boat at foreground is still visible at low light, but the fantastic view is the bright lights along the waterfront.

Hi Stelios,

It would be said almost that the top of the hill is on fire… Still an extraordinary management of the light here. I like contrast between the foreground in the half-light and the background multicoloured and luminous. The reflections are a true pleasure for the eyes. Stelios cheer.

Hi Stelios,
This one worked well even with such a large aperture because there is no close light source that would perturbate your view with a big highlights glow. Nice blue hour view with good remaining details on the foreground boat.

Γεια σου Στέλιο!

Εντυπωσιακή, όπως πάντα η νυχτερινή σου δουλειά, με πολύ καλη διαχείριση του φωτός όσον αφορά την έκθεση, πολύ καλή σύνθεση και προοπτική. έχω όμως κάποιες ενστάσεις: 1ο) το WB είναι πιο "ζεστό" από ότι θα έπρεπε. 2) Παρ'οτι αναφέρεις στο σημείωμα σου ότι διόρθωσες τον ορίζοντα, εμένα μου φαίνεται ότι ακόμα γέρνει.3) Νομίζω ότι αυτή τη φορά το παράκανες λίγο με το saturation. Όλα αυτά δεν αναιρούν την αρχική εντύπωση.

Η δικαιολογημένη αδυναμία σου στις νυκτερινές φωτογραφήσεις (νομίζω ότι το βλεπεις και λίγο σαν πρόκληση), έχει πραγματικά υπέροχα αποτελέσματα.
Το εντυπωσιακό είναι ότι δεν υπάρχουν υπερεκτεθειμένα τμήματα παρ'όλες τις μεγαλες φωτιστικές διαφορές.
Πολύ ενημερωτικό το συνοδευτικό σημείωμα σου.

This is an exceptional night scene with such an array of colours in the lights, which are perfectly captured in the water reflections. The darker area of the image including the boat, provides a good contrast against the golden lights in the background. Well done.

εξαιρετική η νυκτερινή αποτύπωση του φωταγωγημένου Ναυπλίου με τις βάρκες να δημιουργούν ένα μεγάλο βάθος πεδίου στο όλο σκηνικό.Οι λεπτομέρειες των κτηρίων της παραλίας είναι άψογες όπως φυσικά και το σημείωμά σου.

Συμμετρικότατη. Γιατί δεν προτίμησες ISO 200, θα σου έριχνε στο 1,5 sec τη λήψη και θα είχες και καλό κυματισμό; Πάλι το saturation είναι σοφά χρησιμοποιημένο χωρίς υπερβολές.
