Photographer’s Note

Chapels, Churches and Monasteries are so numerous in Crete, it's unbelievable! In fact, it is said there are 8000 of them. Whether they are in towns or in the countryside, anywhere you are, you only have to turn round on yourself, and you'll see at least 3 or 4, on the mountainside, on top of a hill or in a valley, along the road or in the middle of a village, along the beach... And most of them are very well kept.
I have listed all the ones on TE into 3 themes, one for the region of Hania, western Crete; one for the regions of Rethimno and Iraklion in the centre; and one for Lasithi region in the East ( around 140 buildings in all, which represents less than 2% of them.)
Somehow, the lasithi region doesn't seem to attract quite so many tourists as the 3 others. That's where we stayed however, and we found it extremely beautiful and interesting!
I didn't find as many religious buildings for the theme of that region, and yet they are just as numerous.
I am only doing a posting of one chapel; I'll let you go on the themes, to have a look at more if you like, and I will add the few others I photographed as WS.
I could have easily spent my time, taking photos of chapels and churches. It must have been something to do with defending their Orthodox beliefs against the colonisers: Venitians, Turks...
They are all of typical, oriental style, and they are really part of the scenery; they add beauty to it actually!
This chapel I am showing you is situated on the Spinalonga peninsula, off Elounda, north of Agios Nikolaos. We found the scenery out of this world, but it was quite common over there. A real paradise!
Of course, all my Cretan photos are scans, so the quality could be better! However, I hope you enjoy them.

PS. Stamatis has given me one explanation for this incredible number of churches: Greece and Crete are a country of many sailors, fishermen etc.. When they come back safe from a trip where their life has been in danger, they build a chapel in devotion to a saint or to Christ...Thank you Stamatis!
