The Old Town of Rhodes is a bustling neighborhood of some 6,000 people, who live and work in the same buildings in which the Knights of St. John lived six centuries ago; as a living monument to the past it must be nearly unique in Europe, if not the world. Even the visitor whose stay in Rhodes is for no more than a few hours should not neglect to walk around it.

Rhodes (Greek: Ρόδος Rhódhos; Italian Rodi; Ladino: Rodi or Rodes; Ottoman Turkish: ردوس Rodos) is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of both land area and population, situated in eastern Aegean Sea. This Greek island lies approximately 11 miles (18 km) to the west of the Turkish shores, situated between the Greek mainland and the island of Cyprus. As of 2001, it has a population of 117,007 of which 53,709 reside in the capital city of the island.

History

The earliest known settlers were the Dorians c. 1000 BC. During the Classical period the island's affiliations vacillated between Athens, Sparta, and Persia in attempts to preserve a balance of power. A devastating earthquake c. 225 BC destroyed the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. In the medieval period Rhodes was occupied by the Byzantines, Muslims, and Knights of St. John (see Knights of Malta). The knights converted the island into a fortress and held it for two centuries until 1523, when the Turks took control. In 1912 it was taken from Turkey by Italy, and in 1947 it was awarded by treaty to Greece. A year-round tourist industry has brought prosperity to the island.

Hi dear George,
This one is far better compared to your entry of 30.09 . I think the main reason is, that you have here those two men, who gives a certain "life" to the atmosphere and the shot gets mor life.
Wonderfull light management and again very nice compo.
TFS and best regards
MESUT ILGIM

Hello George,
A very appealing composition with excellent exposure management. Lovely warm tones and good clarity; the inclusion of the two individuals, one standing looking the other sitting reading, is a definite plus point and adds much to the atmosphere.

Georgios

Hi George!

Excellent capture, amazing composition and framing, perfect light managment! A very atmospheric shot, in the thumbnail looks like coming from Marakesh or Casablanca. Congratulations!

Hercules

George, the light is great here as well as your POV. I like the title, it gave a impression the man back in time to buy a medieval thing. His long hair and shot pants increase that sensation with a nice contrast with the ambient.
Good work.
Andre

oh i loved getting lost in those streets... and finally reaching somewhere i know... a typical scene from the old town a beautiful one with the arches...

cheers george

Hi george,
The men are framed nicely in the light and the archway. Lovely details on the building and the cobbled road, and I like your prespective so that we can see the buildings further on too, also nice with the goods hanging on the walls on either side.

Hello George,

I imagine this place hasn't changed much in ages. This is a pretty narrow alley with interesting stone walls. The man standing in the middle is a strong focal point in the image. Good colours and perspective to compose the picture. Thanks George :-)

Roberto

Hi George,

Jolie composition, George, avec une belle maitrise de la lumière (pas facile avec cette alternance d'ombre et de lumière!). Belle réalisation!

Hi George,
Indeed, the ancient nature of this old town is well illustrated by this interesting shot. I like the management of light here and the way that the fellow with the long hair is very much attracting the eye of the viewer as he peers downward. The depth is great and the vertical format works well. Thanks for the great note...later.
John

Great colours and light in your composition! Lovely perspective! Like how the man looks interested to the products. Well done.
Best wishes,

Bonjour George,
Regards.
Daniel.

Hi George,

George,

A beautiful one, in a hard and contrasted environment.

Great one George, love the lighting and all the subdued colors. Looks like a couple of local guys, merchants I would think, that are waiting for the tourists to get up and go shopping.
