We left Tinos and took the ferry for the short trip to the island of Andros. We took the bus to Andros Town, also known as Chora, on the other side of the island from the ferry port, Gavrio. Andros town is the holiday home of some of Greece’s wealthier citizens.
I took this on the morning of our longest, hottest walk. We had climbed steadily up from the harbour near where we were staying, and this was the view looking back. You can see the tiny island joined to the main island by a precarious stone bridge. There, the remains of a Venetian castle built in the 13th century, can be seen.
In the WS you can find a closer view of the town and harbour taken from the same place, and the harbour taken from outside our apartment. I’ll point out the church on this shot.

This as made my mind up ... Greece again this September ... excellent shot that shows off the ambiance of the Greek Islands so well. You did well to get a shot with no tourists Kath makes all the difference to me ...
guillaumejm (0) 2007-06-26 16:36
Here I love the way the red roof contrast with other parts of the picture, it is really beautifully caught.
sacavem (18604) 2007-06-26 16:42
The Greece is an excellent country for photograph, Kath.
Great perspective shot here, good details and a super quality job, yes I like the good job here, well done.
Stepan (27210) 2007-06-26 16:47
There is peace, silence, air, space, light, soft colors... There is everything you need to be cool...
That's simply a well composed shot !
An extra mention about the light management too.
Emiel_Skyfreak (3002) 2007-06-26 16:56
Very nice composed shot. The church well off center, even in a very effective place in the frame. Very good colours on it, but also on the rest of the scene. Maybe a bit to much sky..a slightly more panoramic crop would be nice in my opinion. All the blue just doesn't add much, besides that, I like this one! Maybe you could have captured a bit more foreground instead of sky, but well..since it is just road that fills it, maybe not..then just crop! Good sharpness and contrast. Well done.
mesutilgim (72870) 2007-06-26 16:59
Great capture with very nice compo and colors ; which means my next blue voyage coming September has a new target !
Very well done
And best regards from boiling İstanbul !
sleon (9402) 2007-06-26 17:12
What a pleasing composition, where this church seems to be in conversation with its red-roofed friends across the bay - very clever work here. Looks like a very charming and pretty place.
delic (6735) 2007-06-26 17:29
Judging from the lens, I must assume that you couln't move in closer so that the road would not be in the picture. Even so, this is a fine composition with the church and houses at the harbor sharing similarities, yet making counterpoints. Color and clarity are excellent. Regards,
asajernigan (19669) 2007-06-26 17:35
This is a very nice photo as are your WS shots. The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and DOF. Your composition is very nice here and the red roof makes for nice contrast. Although I think my favorite is your "closer view".
anesugur (18783) 2007-06-26 17:57
Beautiful shot, good light, colors and superb POV.
Best regards. Uğur
bostankorkulugu (41300) 2007-06-26 21:48
seems like a beautiful place kath... i love that piece of town on the background, looks great, settled on the rocks... and this little church looks a bit different than the usual kykladic churches, but still so simple and attractive... good shot as always, cheers :)...
jwmunro (286) 2007-06-26 21:58
Hello Kath -
All three images are excellent travel shots and could grace an article of the Greek Isles. I like your main post especially since it has a nice FG element with the little chapel on the hillside. though I think I might have gotten a bit closer to the chapel to minimize the road surface as it is not adding to the image. Otherwise, all of the tech stuff is spot on. Well done.
Thank you for sharing.
stego (22556) 2007-06-26 22:12
A simple compo very well done, very pleasant to the eye. Beautiful view, colours and light.
sabyasachi1212 (19769) 2007-06-27 0:34
I have always associated Greece with the shades of Blue and White, so nice to get a touch of red over here. Scenic landscape, well composed.
With Greetings from India
cbrman (21637) 2007-06-27 1:41
coco (30437) 2007-06-27 2:27
I love Greece and this country is plenty of little but beautiful places. And this photo is a good proof. Quite and amazing place.
Well seen and well captured.
ktanska (22646) 2007-06-27 2:39
Very typical Greek scene. Beautiful, sunny and simple. It's good to have both village and chapel on the scene. There's much of empty sky though.
jjcordier (67146) 2007-06-27 2:49
Gerrit (43763) 2007-06-27 3:02
wonderful composition with the charming little church on one side and the houses far awy in the same colours on the other side. Fantastic early morning light and colours.
axiotea (21647) 2007-06-27 3:19
This little chapel has a lot of charm and is well positioned in the compo with lovely light and colors...
The BG village adds interest and beauty!
delkoo (68) 2007-06-27 3:32
with this well chosen POV and wonderful
light you have achieved a great picture showing a daring composition.
Philippe (11836) 2007-06-27 3:55
Hi, Kath. The white chapel and village and the blue sea and sky. Yes,we are in Greece. The chapel is wonderfully placed in your composition. It dominates the scene and stands well out against the blue of the sky. The other eye-catcher is the village with its red roofs and the nice reflections in the water. The light and colours are very good.
PixelTerror (0) 2007-06-27 4:11
A nice little chapel and an effective composition, I like those white houses on the left that balance the white of the chapel, pity the light was not the most favorable.
Have a nice day,
vincz (19099) 2007-06-27 4:15
Very plesant shot. I love this so calm atmosphere with the church in the foreground so well lit and the village in the background with the same white facades and red roofs. The texture and colour of the sea is excellent bringing nice rflections near the village.
riclopes (35567) 2007-06-27 6:16
Gorgeous place, Kath. I specially like the closer view in the WS1, with the amazing set of white houses beeing pulled out by the little rock island with the precarious stone bridge. But, this one is also very beautiful and superbly well composed. Suddenly I'm imagining another closer composition...including the golden vegetation in foreground, instead of the sky...but then the beach would be lost...ok, forget it :)
lukie (0) 2007-06-27 6:35
nice composition with that little chapel. I guess you wish that you were still there...
derek3755 (2341) 2007-06-27 7:40
A beautifully composed shot with the church off centre, nice colours, nice light.
Henryk_Bilor (20799) 2007-06-27 8:57
Nice capture, good light and perspective at the harbour. I like to read your storys :).
luiscar (3286) 2007-06-27 9:41
Paolo (41218) 2007-06-27 9:50
Hi Kath, amazing image, well built and with good quality, beautiful colours and a peacefull mood.
pboehringer (770) 2007-06-27 10:20
Kath, a very serene and calm iamge with the chapel off center on the right and the sea landscape openning on the left portion. The harsh light conditions were quite well managed and balanced.
josepmarin (56471) 2007-06-27 12:12
This one is a beautiful image that shows us a great sight and a beautiful landscape. But the small church us attracts the look, for its simplicity and its white and red color, which is outlined on the blue sky.
The village that one sees to the left side also has a lot of graphical interest, and completes an elegant photo, with good setting and a great lighting, with very Mediterranean colors.
The WS are good, and I believe that the image 2 might be your principal post also, is beautiful.
Floydian (30970) 2007-06-27 12:56
A very nice view Kath. The red from the roof stands in perfect contrast to all that blue,,,very nice.
What i like more is the horizontal line of clouds...just a minor detail, but very important for the overal composition.
leo61 (0) 2007-06-27 13:01
Great shot with nice light and good natural colors.Good composition with the chapel and it`s red roof and the many red roofs of the village at the oposite side. The diagonal of the road works well for the composition, too.
Cricri (92041) 2007-06-27 13:26

Angshu (52888) 2007-06-28 3:38
The chapel on the right is well balanced by the tiny houses on the left. Wonder about the distance, because they look so tiny! The church has such a simple design yet it's so elegant. Interesting to see no blue around except the sea & the sky...rather the red of the tiled roof. Well composed & taken
bakes888 (18499) 2007-06-28 4:00
Hi Kath. Great spot for a church, excellent views. Well captured photo. Strong, well balanced composition with a good POV. You have handled the light well also. Thanks for sharing.
agbonavita (0) 2007-06-28 8:44
Beautiful scene Kath. Greece is a wonderful place as we can see by your photos.
Nice note about your walk at Andros, did you know the meaning of this city name? I like the church in forground.
danos (78036) 2007-06-28 9:22
inmpressive this simple but at the same time excellent composition with colours and the light.Marvellous details due to the efficient sharpness.Your point of view gives such fine lines to your composition with wonderful view of the church.Great work.
gildasjan (39558) 2007-06-28 10:45
The framing of this image is perfect. I like the way in which this church is enlightened. The light is also well managed and well adjusted clearness. A very good realization. Good day. In a friendly way
siolaw (37640) 2007-06-28 10:47
A good POV to have the chapel on the side and a great view at the bay and village. The light was excellent and that gave those colors with a well controlled exposure. Correct sharpness as well
JCG (35129) 2007-06-29 13:16
A very beautiful whole of photographs. The point of view of the publication with this small chapel is very interesting. It is an extraordinary landscape which I appreciate on the closer view. The colors and the light are very pleasant. I do not know Greece and that gives desire. Thank you Kath.
With all my friendships and a good WE,
cam (9041) 2007-06-30 12:07
I am enjoying looking at your composition.
The church, white with a red roof, echoing the village on the left with the same colors. The separation, blue of the bay, with the blue sky overhead.Good contrast and sharpness.
Have a good WE
UlfE (14112) 2007-06-30 12:29
I usually comment your lastest post, but since this shot is outstanding I just had to comment it. A very charming and beautiful scene. Everything is so perfect. Your best shot so far from your trip to Greece. TFS.
plimrn (21344) 2007-06-30 16:21
I particularly like the repititon of curves here. The shape of the church roof is very pleasing; your framing of the curves of the mountain and clouds seems to enhance that curve. Your complementary post really validates your observaion that it was SOME walk!! I also like the reflection shot. HLJ, Pat
jmcl (14535) 2007-06-30 17:12
What really draws me to this one is the interaction of the stark white of the church .. with that wonderful blue infinite horizon .. thoughtful image.
Photo65Net (43120) 2007-07-01 2:17
Beauitufl compo, perfectly balanced with great use of the diagonal of the image.
Colors and tones are nicely polarized, with deep contrasts.
I like this one a lot,
danyy (0) 2007-07-01 3:55
Emile (20348) 2007-07-02 15:48
One of your best in this series Kath, very well captured, nice colors and great POV. Very good composition with the small church giving you a good perspective. Love the way the sea disappears in the horizon. Very well done.
berseph (1758) 2007-07-02 18:03
Hi Kath. This is a lovely view. The little church on the edge of the water is very beautiful. I really liked your WS photos as well. Beautiful scenes all around.
Muse (34936) 2007-07-05 6:26
paura (47166) 2007-07-06 15:33
Beautiful landscape here, Kath. The well chosen POV allows an excellent dep. Nice technical settings also.
banyanman (7772) 2007-07-07 11:44
Hi Kath. An informative triple post that shows us Andros from different POVs. Actually I like the first WS post the best (the shot of the harbour taken from next to this church) because there is a bit too much empty sky in this post for my liking. Lots of sky works well when you have an impressive cloudscape, or it is one of those minimalist compositions when you want a lot of empty blue sky to provide balance, but in this shot it just feels, well, 'empty'. With a wider angle lens I think you could have overcome that (do you have the Nikkor 12-24 mm lens? It's a wonderful lens for landscape photography and perfect for a situation like this. I'm giving you my two points for the WS of the harbour - I like the composition of that and good light management. Cheers . . . David
ekinokswest (2992) 2007-07-13 16:57
usually such houses are built at places very higher from the sea level , the view may be confusing but it looks as if water is only a few meters below. this i find interesting.
also there is another fact I suppose makes your photo unique and rarely available. If other photographers had been there , by timing or luck probably the walls of this house (probably a church)look different. one side is totally covered with shadow and one side is very bright. peculiar to your photography
ruisc_pt (10133) 2008-03-16 8:40
I think you know I'm a fan of your's...
This is a fabulous outstanding POV and light/colours balance.
