Photographer’s Note
Stavronikita Monastery, the smallest on Athos, was built ca. 1000 AD, perhaps by a man called Nikitas the squint-eyed (stravos in Greek). After 1200 AD it was dispeopled and a dependency of other Monasteries. It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1540 by the Patriarch of Constantinople Jeremiah 1st. In 1546 its church and refectory were decorated by the famous painter Theophanes the Cretan. From 1968 till 2005 it was totally restored.
Here a shot of its western wing in 1989, some months after its restoration.
Scanned from a Kodachrome 64 ASA slide by Kodak in 1996 and processed in Photoshop recently. The film is grainy.
