Konta sas

Skyros, is the biggest and the most northern island of the Sporades in the Aegean Sea. It is located 38 km northeast of Kimi (Evia). It is 200 sq. km, has 130 km of coastline and 2900 inhabitants. The island has distinct geographical similarities with Evia. It can be perceived as two geographically different islands joined by a fertile plain. The people live in the plain and the northern part which is very green with olive tree groves and pine woods. It’s dominated by the Olympus mountain range. The southern part of the island, is rocky, windswept, barren and fascinating. The dominant vegetation is ‘maquis’ like - low thorny shrubbery. In some valleys there are sometimes trees, as can be seen in the pic.

Skyros is dotted with small Greek Orthodox chapels. They offer a nice help with orientating while trekking across the island and are often maintained by the farmer / shepherd who lives nearby. They’re impeccably maintained and give insight into the spirituality of the islanders and the way they integrate this in their daily lives.

Displayed here is a classic white/blue chapel, almost lost in the folds of the mountainous landscape on the southern part of the island. While speeding along a mountain road on our motor-scooters (one of the hidden pleasures of Greek holidaymaking ;-) we found this sight impressive enough to apply the brakes and take in the scene and marvel at the symbolism of the connection the small chapel made with the wild landscape and the dramatic sky.

Konta sas (Nearer to You) is an album of Elefteri (Freedom), three Greek Orthodox priests on an evangelistic mission who burst on to the Greek music scene in 2001 and scored a big hit. They were commonly known as ‘the rocking priests’ and indeed fall squarely into the gospel rock tradition. We were for a short trip in Greece at the time then and picked up a copy of the hyped album. It was amongst the many Greek CD’s we loaded on the 1 GB disk of our nifty Hi-MD player for the journey and it was pleasurable experience to listen to it and in this way became a part of the soundtrack of our holiday.

PCS2 tech: the usual: slightly cropped, altered the contrast, saturation, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, USM-ed , added a frame and saved for the web.

Wow! Big sly over a great dry landscape!
This is indeed how I remember some Greek landscape, dry and barren, and the sky over it, makes it even more impressive with the shades.
The white chapel with the blue roof is an eye catcher.

U heeft de mooie wolken meegebracht naar Nederland maar ze zijn van een goede kwaliteit, het mooiste aan deze fot zijn de fantastische contrasten die u heeft vast gelegd in combinatie met de warme kleuren.

Impressive landscape shot. I particularly like the effect you have captured of the clouds and the shadow they cast on the hillsides. The colours are nice and warm and the exposure well balanced. Nice sky and cloud patterns too. Well done.

Hallo Bert,
Ik schrok al even want zag alleen amar land en lucht........totdat ik eindelijk dat kleine blauwe huisje/kerje zag staan. Juist daardoor krijgt de foto een stuk meer impact in de compositie en daardoor een veel betere indruk van de wijdsheid van het lanschap.

Beautiful photo, Bert - a special light to accentuate the rich texture and detail of this undulating landscape, and a fine detail and resting point for the eye provided by the blue-white chapel in the middle. The cloud cover makes a good topping, and the polarizer worked very well, too. Seems you had a fine stay down there.

Mooi Grieks landschap. De kleuren zijn erg prettig en de grote wolken doen het ook goed. Een leuk detail vind ik dat kleine kapelletje met dat blauwe dak. Het steekt leuk af tegen de achtergrond. Mooi werk!

Well composed with superb lighting. I like the brown, rather barren look with the little chapel hidden in the folds of the landscape. The sky is alluring, with good texture. A clear crisp shot of a fascinating area. Enjoyed the note. Regards.

Nice landscape setting in the best Carper spirit with the high clouded sky at top. The mountains is well presented and very for the scaling the houses goes for a fine detail in this landscape setting

Even meegenieten van je recente vakantie, Bert, mooi die shaduwvlekken op het landschap van die indrukwekkende wolken. Moest daar weeral toevallig nog een klein huisje staan dat blauw/wit shittert in de zon ! :))
