Photographer’s Note
Monemvasia is build on a rock, and it is likened to the "Gibraltar of Greece". The rock where Monemvasia stands on today had taken form after a massive earthquake that took place in 375 BC.
From history we know that Monemvasia was first established by the Avars who were fleeing from their enemies. They had taken refuge on the rock of Monemvasia which they fortified, as such they became the first settlers in Monemvasia.
During the history of Monemvasia the rock and fortifications that stands at 300 meters above sea level, became refuge to many people.
