This was one of those grab type of photos, totally unexpected, totally caught me off guard.
We were walking back to our hotel after an early morning photo shoot, so we wanted to rest for a while.
One the way back we ran into this bride being photographed - which we soon found out to be a common event on Santorini! There are SO many brides walking around in their wedding dresses.
She didn't seem to mind me getting up close as well, perhaps the photographer didn't like it I don't know...but I don't care :)
The bride even looked straight at me from time to time, I think she was soaking in all the attention she could get!
I didn't really have the luxury of composing my shot, I just had to go with what was presented to me - so I used the bg building and the tiles on the ground to compliment the scene. And obviously I didn't have an external Flash to illuminate her face, as I said this was a grab type of shot.
Its pretty funny when you get up super early for morning blue hour, and you see Brides in wedding gowns with their newlywed husband as the photographer walking around the steep cliff's of Oia. There was one early morning in particular when I found myself competing with a bride and groom for a 'private' entrance only spot - I let them have it :)
I have a few more of these, maybe i'll post them as time goes by. Hope you like it.

Very fine artistic scene. The white dress fits perfectly with the chapel. Well seen.

That's how tourism can change a lot. When I visited the island in 1983 there were no brides at all :)
The white wedding dress fits perfectly into the typical image of the Cyclades.
You had no time to think of a good composition but you still managed to include the Mediterranean and the old crater wall of the island.
Best regards, Paul

Very cool grab moment, it's like a scene from a magazine. I can imagine the islands tourist board using this as a promo to brides all over the world. No wonder she was soaking in the attention though, she looks beautiful and even more so placed against this iconic backdrop. Really nicely done to compse the scene so well with the tiles, when I try grab shots like this I am lucky if it's even in focus!
Very generous of you to give the private doorway to the happy couple. Did you photobomb any of their shots? Haha.
Thanks as always

oh yeah,I know this:)ubiquitous view on Santorini-and my advice is-always follow newlyweds-they know the most picturesque locations:)
Excellent capture Craig-even if it´s hard to come up with something new and original from Santorini-the island is worth visiting anyway.
I´m waiting for more
Have a good sunday

You went all the way to Greece to become a wedding photographer?? What, are people no monger getting married in Vancouver? lol
Great grab, having to do this on the fly is no easy thing, and even more difficult under the bright light of the sun. It may have been a common thing to witness around the island, but this is another fresh take from a place we've all seen many times before.
It sure seems there's no doubt the women were following your lens around. :) As you mentioned, the tiled pattern of the pavement is a nice addition to the negative space of this capture, and the flutter of her dress puts the scene in motion. Smart, and quick thinking to catch this opportunity. You may now kiss the camera! Have a good one. Take it easy.
Cheers from the singles side,

Having to do this on the fly is no easy thing, here is successful. Splendid scene with nice light and a superb blend of white and blue. You got Lucky!
I loved this place!
Thanks for sharing.

Love all the white and blue. It's nice that the bride matches with what seems to be a small chapel - or maybe it's just some kind of wall with a cross on top??!! You did well with this photo op. The sunlight was very strong, but the exposure is good. The bride is well-placed in the frame, and I even like the floor. :-)
chrislo (4097) 2014-06-15 12:50
The setting is very beautiful and the picture is well composed with the bride balancing the shot and adding a human and narrative element. The little white church placed against the blue background is so eye-catching and beautiful to look at. It looks like a wonderful location with the sea behind and the vastity of the sky to end up this well presented image. Well managed light and lovely natural colours.

Oia seems to be so popular as a place to tie the knot, so not surprised you saw yet another bride, I did on my one day in the town. Your opportunist image here is just perfect and I applaud your speed and POV, and all the more impressive giving that you are balancing on a "wonky" knee too!
Have a good week - B.
mirosu (16265) 2014-06-16 4:33
You are lucky fellow, such a beautiful object without pre-ordering it. Excellent, well balanced composition, superb light and excellent contrast against clear blue sky. I like it.
Very well done.
Sergiom (80684) 2014-06-16 5:47
Il y a des moments de grâce comme celui-ci et il ne faut surtout pas les rater. Tu n'as pas manqué ton coup avec cette mariée qui blanche sur blanc avec un fond bleu fait très grec.
tyro (25286) 2014-06-16 10:26
So now you're a wedding photographer too! :o)
A brilliant scene of blue and white and what better than to include a bride in white to add just a little extra sparkle to your photograph? Just hope that the official photographer wasn't too peeved - wedding photographers can sometimes be an arrogant bunch.
Of course, in some parts of Greece it is traditional for people to approach the bride and pin bank notes to her dress - perhaps you should have done that to make sure you secured some good pics!
A delightful composition with brilliant light and lovely vibrant colours, perfect exposure and, as always, exquisite details and sharpness.

After the lady in red - one in white. Seems as you are out as paparazzi on the island... Nice taken the bride, white building and the balcony edges contrast blue sky and sea - and what a happy face of the soon-to-be a married lady.

An unusual scene ! You did it very well with the white dress coming with the white church. The light is excellent, the exposure too. And the sharpness is perfect. Interesting note as usual.

Did you know that I always try to get pictures like this whenever I meet newly wed during public photo sessions, or just leaving church? I never see it in Sweden but in recent years I have met many such couples in other parts of Europe, most recently in Poland the other week. Unfortunately Poland doesn't offer the same magnificently white surroundings, possibly more easily handled light. Not even I carry an external flash on my journeys. How very Greek this white and blue picture is.
Indrasish (2939) 2014-06-16 22:28
Wonderful shot by you.. I like your composition with this bride and the deep moody blue sky.. Good sharpness and nice details too.. you balanced masterfully this image between blue and white color.. Very well done my friend..
Good morning and best wishes from Kolkata..

Hi Craig, You were lucky to see the attractive ladies in right places, first lady in red, now in white. Now it is trendy to have the wedding photos somewhere in a nice spot and it is a good opportunoty also for other photographers. Amazing this all white church against the blue Greek sky.

What a lovey shot! Truly blue and white subject!:) Perfectly captured one with superb timing and smartly managed composition. Very well done! Like it!
CLODO (34546) 2014-06-20 1:06
Good situation, and you've taken a good option in a few seconds: have the bride and also the small chapel, blue against white.
eldancer1 (36343) 2014-06-21 7:49
And those types of photograph, the unexpected, sometimes are much better. Great timing and capture especially with her dress being blown by the wind. Good lighting and sharp details. Well done, tfs.
pierrefonds (66875) 2014-06-26 4:37
The presence of the bride is animating the scene. The wideness of the area is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and the colors of the church. The good luminosity is making the colors to stand out. Have a nice day.
ourania (46264) 2014-06-26 6:58
couples from all over the world have their wedding on Santorini, running into so many wedding photo sessions is no wonder:) this is a lovely scene, dynamic and cheerful, evoking the Cyclades immediately. The pattern of the tiles fills and decorates a great part of the frame, it conveys depth and movement. I like very much the quality of the light and the colours, in spite of the inconvenient angle of the sun. The interaction between the bride and the chapel is delightful, there's wonderful depth in the background. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

You were really lucky to see such a moment! I like this shot a lot, the little white chapel, the pose of the bride, the pattern of the pavement... every element seems on the right place and the white really catch my eye! Good and different!
