I had planned to post another photo but something extraordinary happened yesterday afternoon and I had to tell you.
Two fishing boats found, dragged and brought out of the sea a very large anchor that had been lying at the bottom of the sea for centuries, probably. It is nearly three metres long and covered with material from the sea, there's even a sponge attached on it. People say it must have belonged to a pirate ship, there were so many around the islands in the past.
The fishing boats brought it to the port of Ayia Marina and left it there, quite a few people gathered to see it. A few minutes after the anchor was placed on the wharf, everyone was gone, except, of course, the anglers. I guess incidents like this are not so rare in the Aegean Sea.
I have a wide picture and a detail of the anchor in the WORKSHOP.
Thank you for visiting

Hello dear friend
you must be very lucky living in such an island
and seeing only sea and sky away from the
big cities I red your useful notes about
the very large anchor that had been lying
at the bottom of the sea for centuries
beautiful story to write a book with
pirates and pirates ships
thanks for sharing all those interesting
notes with us
have a nice new day

Ciao e buona serata

A fine shot and an interesting story. What surprises me is that something like this, thay may have been lying in the sea for centuries, is just left on the quay. Will it be properly taken care of, until it can be handed over to archeologists, or is this just so very common in Greece that nobody really cares? The anchor certainly gave you a good foreground for this photo of the angler sitting calmly at his usual place hoping for a catch. I like the WS photos too, especially the close-up where the anchor looks like a strange and colourful fish, or maybe a snake.

All three photo culminate to a special story you told.
This is really rare occurance, and I am puzzled to see that not many people gathered around and just left it on the jetty.
The law in israel says when found something alike, the Antiques-authrity (by the goverment) would come and collect this item for further inquiery.
Fine shot of the main pic., view across the bay and the inclusion of the angler, well done. Stunning rusty colors.

beautiful picture with great foreground highlighted by the anchor. the angler perfectly positioned and makes a very interesting subject.the calm water of the sea and the mountain are beautiful. most interesting note. the anchor probably had a great and exciting past and definitely reminds me of 'Treasure Island'. thanks for sharing and have a nice evening.

Extraordinary discovery. Interesting old anchor with the sponge. Very nice main photo with the angler and the view of the sea. All people are gone and there is quiet atmosphere again.

lovely picture and well spotted scene of fisherman on the shore.
The piece of wood on the sand adds very much interest to the foreground and the fishing man absorbed in his activity has been captured in very natural way.
I also like the white boat on the horizon.
Very beautiful light and masterly managed, pretty warm colors and perfect sharpness.
Enjoy your day and TFS!

Only and lonely is these fisherman along the water, but he is busy with his fishing material.
The anchor in foreground is maybe a little bit older than I self, but very well found.
Excellent captured, nice presentation.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice day,

The old anchor with its beautifully depicted textures makes an excellent frame for the fisherman in this well composed image. I like the warm light and colours and the agreeable atmosphere.

Oh, if only this old anchor could speak...I'm sure it would have quite a story to tell. In the meantime I suppose we'll just have to use our own imaginations. :) Would it be too easy to say how much this subject and its placement anchors the image? ;) Bad pun aside, this really is quite interesting and out of the ordinary. I think it's amusing that it would garner so much immediate attention, only to be quickly, and once again forgotten. No matter its relevance, you came upon an intriguing opportunity and took full advantage to create a story to match the scene and its spontaneous moment. Beautiful warm light here, I don't even fish, but I wouldn't mind spending time amongst the anglers to enjoy this tranquil atmosphere. Isn't it fun, and even exciting when these unexpected moments occur? :) Have a great day. Take care.

That is a fantastic photo with a fine narration. The nonchalant angler depicts the peoples disinterest in the centuries old anchor that you speak about in your note. I India there would have been a crowd of at least hundred around it and I bet that some them would want a piece of it. The anchor creates good FG interest. Good one with vibrant colours, superb light and excellent clarity, thanks for sharing.

As the saying goes "a fisherman goes fishing not necessarily to catch fish but for the solitude and time spend with nature." Love the scene it's so beautiful and peaceful and I won't really care if I catch fish or not. Nicely captured with good lighting and wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.

Quite a find, Ourania, and I like that you've chosen to place it here in context, with the fisherman going about his business, unimpressed by the piece of history behind him! Wonderful workshops as well giving us the closeup and full versions of this archaeological find. Thanks!

Interesantan tekst o mestu i trenutku, lep pogled ...
Dobar trenutak snimka, ostrina, kontrast i perspektiva, lepo pokazano mesto sa sidrom i ribolovcem, lepe boje.
Dobar rad sa lepim fotografijama u radionici.

Lovely scene and narratives, the ancient anchor does look as if it is admiring the view and the angler. Technique and concept are important but the creative essence is the photographer's mental visualisation of the image and a shot like this always leave the viewer wondering, so your description helps bridge the wondering gap so aptly. It's nicely framed shot with brilliant light and colours all add to a great composition. Well done, TFS

You are lucky photographer. I'm always waiting for occasion like this but very often without success. May be I'm not patient enough. I like this photo, not because of this interesting anchor but because of the nice composition in superb light. The fisherman is a nice focal point in this photo. The background with nice blue sea water, superb sky and the dark hills is excellent.
Very well done
Wish you a very nice week.

Great journalistic photo! Is the anchor still there? Have the Antiquities Authorities been informed, or did it turn out to be not so ancient after all? I am curious now.

adores (42331) 2014-03-18 17:23
It must be really old. Looking at it I cannot even imagine how long it has stayed lost in the sea. Nice composition! I like the way you framed it, with the fisherman in background, so concentrated on his work.
