The chapel on the rock
This is the Agios Ioannis chapel (Saint John's chapel) on the island of Skopelos, one of the Sporades islands. It has recently become famous through being the site of the wedding procession in the 2008 film Mamma Mia. When googling with a combination of the words "Skopelos", "chapel" and "Mamma Mia", there is a big chance that one of the first suggested links is an article from the Daily Mail entitled "How the feelgood movie of 2008 has ruined the Greek paradise island of Skopelos". I went through it quickly, but not inclined to be convinced that Skopelos had become a disaster. Skopelos is a ferry away from the closest airport (on nearby Skiathos) and apparently that tends to limit the damages. Although yes there are several cruising tours visiting the place for an hour or two. But go to Agios Ioannis early in the morning and you'll have the place for yourself, and perhaps enjoy skinny dipping in translucent waters with that amazing rock in front of you!
Most of the visitors climb the steep stairs to the chapel and, from the comments I read in a guestbook, many seem to be disappointed. Indeed, the chapel is small and the decoration is on the very ordinary side. That's when the reality hits: hey, this is not the interior of the church in the movie! Yes, Hollywood lies from time to time. Just hope that the disappointed visitors are comforted by the splendid view because that Mediterranean coastal landscape is sure very beautiful.
Regarding the photo, I was warned just a few seconds before I took it that a nice boat was coming. I rushingly grabbed my camera in my day-pack, quickly selected the settings I wanted, hastily improved my point of view, and shot a couple of times. I wish the boat was a little further from the rock, but I guess I should consider myself lucky to have been able to shoot it before it was gone.

Salut Claude ;
Elle est sacrément perchée , cette chapelle ! sur ce remarquable rocher dominant les flots . Bien vue l'inclusion du bateau . Il faut parfois dégainer vite pour profiter d'un élément furtif qui enrichira la composition .

very beautiful photo. The impressive rock growing from the corner creates a great perspective. And there's a sailing ship for us to see the scale. Excellent job.

une très belle prise de vue, j'aime bien l'opposition entre le bateau et le rocher.La lumière est superbe et agréable présence de la chapelle en haut du rocher.

What makes this a picture, instead of just another photo (if you understand what I mean) is definitely the inclusion of the nice looking boat.. Anyone could take a photo of a dead object like a rock with a chapel on top, but adding something makes all the difference. It could have been a line of people in colourful clothes climbing the rock. Now it happened to be the boat. It's a really nice and well timed shot.

Lovely place this must be. A peacful place for a chappel. I like the composition. You had strong light what makes difficult to get a good balance. Maybe you can improve the light with some PP

Looks like a maritime version of Meteora! The yacht nis well placed in the frame and a fantastic decisive moment shot before it disappeared behind the rocky crag. Excellent color, sharpness and framing with a level horizon well away from the centre. Tfs!

Good afternoon Claude,
The mighty rock looks from a distance as an imaginary Lion's head. Fabulous taken shot, at the precise moment the sail-boat passed and gave good scale to comprehand the size of that cliff.
Marvelous outlines, favorable daylight and clarity well collcted.

Wow...this must be the most beautiful setting for the chapel. Every place in Greece is so scenic, this one is no exception. Thanks for showing us.

A wonderful composition, the rock is impressive, rising in the sea with all these escarpments, incredible appeal of the small chapel at the top, and very nice sailboat, we see by the rock is a perfect complement.
Very good image quality, sharpness is also ideal.
Very good job.
Enjoy the weekend.

Good light on the rock and the church, and nice framing. The boat really adds to the photo - you were lucky to catch it in time.

amazing location of the chapel. Your perspective slightly from below well emphasizes the elevated location of this place. The boat on the other hand adds a scale reference. Very attractive place, great presentation,
