Photographer's Note
The tomb of Salaminian Fighters of the Battle of Salamis, situated in the ancient port at the cape of Kynosoura.
from wikipedia:
The Battle of Salamis (Greek: Ναυμαχία τῆς Σαλαμῖνος, Naumachia tēs Salaminos) was fought between an Alliance of Greek city-states and the Persian Empire in September 480 BCE, in the straits between the mainland and Salamis, an island in the Saronic Gulf near Athens. It marked the high-point of the second Persian invasion of Greece which had begun in 480 BCE.
To block the Persian advance, a small force of Greeks blocked the pass of Thermopylae, while an Athenian-dominated Allied navy engaged the Persian fleet in the nearby straits of Artemisium. In the resulting Battle of Thermopylae, the rearguard of the Greek force was annihilated, whilst in the Battle of Artemisium the Greeks had heavy losses and retreated after the loss at Thermopylae. This allowed the Persians to conquer Boeotia and Attica. The Allies prepared to defend the Isthmus of Corinth whilst the fleet was withdrawn to nearby Salamis Island.
Aeschylus claims that as the Persians approached (possibly implying that they were not already in the Straits at dawn), they heard the Greeks singing their battle hymn (paean) before they saw the Allied fleet:
Forward, sons of the Greeks,
Liberate the fatherland,
Liberate your children, your women,
The altars of the gods of your fathers,
And the graves of your ancestors:
Now is the fight for everything.
In WS the opposite view of the tomb.

Hi Vasilis
From memory both Darius & Xerxes of Persia caused problems for ancient Greece. Good graphism & sharpness with an excellent upward pov on the prow of the boat and the sailors. Good tonal range & shadow detail. Tfs!

Hello Vasilis!
I really like your mighty warriors offered in black and white! Very beautiful silhouetted on the bottom exasperatingly over-exposed! Beautiful black bottom fades to gray! Bravo!
Best regards, Nino.

In 1989 I visited Greece. My most beloved souvenir from that trip was a copper made statue of Leonidas of Sparta. Maybe it's kitsch, maybe not...but I liked that hero and his sense of sacrifice for the others
I think our f...ing eurocrats should learn something from this hero.

Hello Vasilis,
Another great B&W contribution. A magnificent epical artwork, very hard to be uncommitted. I very much liked the way you composed and framed this shot. Starting with the darkest tones at the bottom and gradually getting lighter as the eye moves up; it's an excellent effect and a great idea. That goes to my favorites too. Thanks for sahring. Best wishes,
Suleyman

TFS.
