Photographer's Note

A house built in the beginning of the 19th century. The road coming from Ayia Marina leads to Crithoni and Alinda. It is said to have been one of the most luxurious houses on Leros once. During the bombardments of the Battle of Leros, the family that lived there seeked refuge to the caves, like all civilians on the island. The house was bombarded by air and hit from the ground. When they came back, after the end of the battle, they found it destroyed and looted. The family left the island for good.
Due to its strategic importance during WW2 and to the great battle, Leros has been named Malta of the Aegean.

Leros in fact is the island of Navarone. The Great battle of Leros during the second world war probably inspired Alistair MacLean to write the guns of Navarone. The battle of Leros lasted for almost 50 days and nights from the 23 of September 1943 to the 16th of November 1943, when the German forces Launch the operation Leopard to capture the island from the Italian and the British forces after Italy's capitulation in 1943.
During the battle of Leros numerous aircrafts of the Luftwaffe and RAF where hit and sunk in the sea around Leros as well as many war ships., therefore has a unique underwater museum ready to be explored by divers who will find a unique experience exploring all those sunken war remnants. There is also a war museum built in a war tunnel at the area of Lakki (near the main port of the island), Merikies, with many items from the battle like guns, helmets, uniforms and other memorabilia. The war museum reminds a mini Dover museum to those that have been there..
