Photographer's Note

The picturesque small town of Areopolis (older name "Tsimova") is the real "capital" of Mani region. The old part of the town, the fortified settlement is really beautiful and atmospheric. Stone prevails everywhere on the walls of the old houses and in the narrow alleys. You can see some typical Maniat "towerhouses" and byzantine churches.

It is said that the town of Areopolis was dedicated to Ares (Mars), God of war (Areopolis= "town of Ares"). Others say that the name comes from the word "Αέρας" ("Aeras"=Wind), because the wind blows strong in the region. In the square of 17th of March, you can see the church of "Panmegiston Taxiarxon" with its imposing belltower (in the background). The 17th of March 1821 is a very important day for Areopolis, because it was the day the Greek Revolution for Independence against the Ottoman empire, started from the square of the town, even before the "official" day (25th of March 1821).

lovely shot with all the atmsphere of a greek evening in town. The blue light and the warmth on the brickworks thrown by the lights is so very atmospheric.The criss-crossing of the bunting (little flags) tells us what we already know; that this is Greece.

podemos notar la ligera brisa que movía las banderitas griegas, gracias a una larga exposición bien gestionada. La escena es muy relajante y nos hace sentir el espíritu de esos viejos pueblos y sus maravillosas callejuelas de piedra.
Excelente composición que pone en valor la belleza de los colores y la atmósfera especial de este lugar, con una excelente luminosidad en la imagen.

Gotta love these old stone walls and the palms that seem to be growing out of the paving stones. The well worn paving stones are shiny enough to pick up a reflection.
