Walking around Acropolis you can hear the music from this street musician playing his "laterna". Laterna is a mechanical instrument "programed" in a unique way to play various songs. The musician choose the song with a buton and by turning the handle of the instrument the tune is performed. Laterna was very common in early 20th century years in Athens but slowly they dissapeard from the streets. Since those years the instrument was highly decorated with folk art motives and objects as photos from old films and long gone actors, as it is clearly seen in the shot.
Today I think that only this one is existing. The "musician" is gypsy and he is on the streets with the help of his two young sons, as seems to be a "family business". Old traditions are fading in time slowly...so it's nice to see some of them resisting and bringing to us memories of the past.

This man's business look flourishing... Nicely done with a great importance given to the "Laterna" ( I have learned a few things with your note today)

Hi George, a nice capture of this guy with his colorfull instrument and a shot in true TE spirit, such instruments can also be seen in cities of my region from time to time, their french name is "orgue de barbarie". Your focus is good, colors & sharpness are fine, I'm wondering what he's doing with the left arm...

Good colorfull shot George. I have never seen this type of musician so it's very intersting for me to see one. I wonder if a tighter cropping to take out the cars on the left would not be better. Thanks for this one.

I feel something warm, familiar in most of your photos. Especially when they tell about your traditional life. I think the reason of that feeling is to be Mediterranian, Aegean and also eastern for the rest of the world.
Thanks for that feeling and thanks for shots stopping the time.

Very bright in colours and mood, George! :-) Wonderful sharpness and fine details from daily life at background. Love most his posture and expression captured - his white clothes and hat make him contrast in amazingly effective way to the environment. Very good job indeed!

How many flags are there on his cart ? He's a real patriot, isn't he ?
Laterna ? like in 'laterna magika' ? I believe the french name for this instrument is 'orgue de barbarie'.
They are often colourful and richly carved. Here the box it-self seems rather sober. The clothes, pictures and jewellery that he uses to dresses it are ... bright.
The man looks happy. I like the hand moving toward the hat.
The car parking in background is not consistent with the rest of the picture.

Hello Giorgo. I think this man is the same of this man in one of my photos:
Very nice and vivid colors. Excellent notes also, with many infos about this "near-to-death" music organ! Very nice work!

Ha, nice to see this guy again, I remember seeing him on a photo by Xalkida. He really seems to have experience in posing for photographers, and standing aside his colorful laterna decorated with Greek flags he makes a delightful subject. Good capture against the urban background, well done George.

A very colourful picture, George, an expression of hapiness or perhaps sympathy on the musician's face; it is a pity that old traditions are fading in time slowly, but this is unfortunately a sign of our times...; however, it is good to capture these moments so we can show them to our children, then to our grandchildren and so on...
I liked this photo a lot, George, very good work!

Colorful, sharp, good saturation & great contrast & graphism. Just the way I like it! I also like the framed b&w dual portrait.
A superb dail life shot. Good work!

Perfect for my group theme. Very useful note. A pity that this old tradition is finishing. I like the pose of musician: it seems he is going to put off his hat to thank people around who appreciated his performance. The background on the left is a bit distracting so perhaps I'd crop a little but I know that it is a street scene and we can accept the real state of things.
Thanks for this picture.
