Monastery of the Holy Trinity, a photo from Trikala, Thessaly

Photographer's Note

The Meteora monasteries are built on a strange rock formations ("stone needles") rising perpendicularly in the middle of a vast plain, on a wide plain, Thessaly, as if by magic come from the land of many mountains dark rock, narrow and of considerable height perpendicular to the ground.

On some of these strange and impressive rock massifs are inaccessible monasteries of Meteora. Its construction began in the s. XIV and ending in s. XVI. With up to 24 monasteries, some were destroyed in the 2nd World War by the Germans.

The reason for building them in places as inaccessible, was initially for defensive reasons, because the only way up was throwing a basket from above and supplies were carried by the locals.

Currently there are six monasteries in operation, Agios Nikolaos, Agia Barbara or Russanu Moni, Moni Barlaam, the Great Meteor, Agia Triada and Agios Stefanos. His cult is Greek Orthodox Christian.

Over time they have been building stairs and bridges thanks to which today can be visited. Among these monasteries are treasures.

The monasteries are inhabited by monks or nuns dedicated to prayer and religious icon painting.

The image will now show up to the Monastery of the Holy Trinity is located on one of the most impressive Meteora rocks. There is the monastery since 1362, but the main construction was carried out between 1456-1476. Inside you the frescoes by the brothers Nikolaos Andoni and 1741. The frescoes are also Narthika 1692.
Another point of interest is the chapel of San Juan Bautista, carved on a rock, with frescoes from 1682.

Los Monasterios de Meteora están edificados sobre unas extrañas formaciones rocosas ("agujas de piedra") que se elevan perpendicularmente en medio de una amplia llanura, sobre una gran llanura, la de Tesalia, como por arte de magia surgen de la tierra numerosas montañas de roca oscura, estrechas y de considerable altura perpendiculares a la tierra.

Sobre algunos de estos extraños e impresionantes macizos rocosos se encuentran inaccesibles los monasterios de Meteora. Sus construcciones comenzaron en el s. XIV y se finalizan en el s. XVI. Llegaron a ser hasta 24 los monasterios, algunos fueron destruidos en la 2ª guerra mundial por los alemanes.

El motivo de edificarlos en lugares tan inaccesibles, fue en principio por motivos defensivos, ya que la única manera de subir era con un cesto que lanzaban desde arriba y las provisiones eran llevadas por los lugareños.

Actualmente son seis los monasterios en funcionamiento, el de Agios Nikolaos, Moni Russanu o Agia Barbara, Moni Barlaam, el Gran Meteoro, Agia Triada y Agios Stefanos. Su culto es cristiano ortodoxo griego.

Con el tiempo se han ido construyendo escaleras y puentes gracias a los que hoy en día se pueden visitar. Dentro de estos monasterios se encuentran verdaderos tesoros.

Los monasterios estan habitados por monjes o monjas, dedicados a la oración y a la pintura de iconos religiosos.

La imagen que hoy os muestro corresponde a el Monasterio de la Santísima Trinidad está ubicado sobre una de las rocas más impresionantes de Meteora. Existe este monasterio desde 1362, pero la construcción principal fue realizada entre los años 1456-1476. Destacan en su interior los frescos, obra de los hermanos Andonio y Nikolao en 1741. En el Narthika también existen frescos de 1692. Otro punto de interés es la capilla de San Juan Bautista, tallada en una roca, con frescos del año 1682.

Fine depth as the area on the valley back far, showen well on image.

Hola Luis, encantadora foto de este monasterio de ubicaciòn casi imposible, de ahì su fama e interès, la foto està muy bien tomada para realzar la verticalidad de la roca sobre la que està construida la edificacion, con nitidez y la profundidad que le dà el valle que se ve a la derecha. Merveilleuse photo et excellente perspective avec les montagnes qui se fondent dans la fumée atmosphérique. Le rocher avec les édifices est vraiment magnifique et je me pose toujours la question à savoir comment ils font pour accéder la-haut..... esta zona y sus monasterios como nidos de águila es realmente espectacular. Parece imposible construir en las cimas de estas rocas, pero es una realidad.
Excelente captura del impresionante paisaje, en una imagen bien iluminada, con un eficaz encuadre vertical, unos colores fantásticos y una profundidad de campo bien gestionada.
La luz y ls sombras aumentan la calidad estética de tu composición.

Estos monasterios griegos desafían todas las leyes de la lógica, pero desde luego muestran un gusto por los lugares bellos y solitarios que un buen fotógrafo no puede desaprovechar. La composición de esta imagen es realmente impactante, el punto de vista es soberbio con la gran montaña al fondo y destacando el promontorio sobre el que está el monasterio con el perfil de la pendiente... colores vivos, buen detalle. Un conjunto precioso!

Leyendo tu nota me enero que ahora se llega a ellos por escaleras, mas accesible, pero no tan romantico como antes

Comento ahora tu foto con un muy buen POV y formato vertical para apreciar lo alto del peñon en que se encuentra el monasterio
Buena idea de dar profundidad dejando ese espacio a la derecha

Meteora seems an interesting place and quite intriguing. At least, I have 2 definite must-see places when I visit Greece soon! I really wonder how would one enter that monastery! It's just amazing how these monasteries were built in this amazing and unfathomable rock formations! Brilliant lighting, superb colors, clear, clean and sharp image! Great POV and DOF too!
