Rooftop Rowboat, a photo from Kyklades, South Aegean

Photographer's Note

This picturesque old rowing boat sits atop the roof of a house on the edge of the caldera in the town of Thira on the island of Santorini, Greece. It has graced this particular rooftop for many years and looking at various postings on TE, seems to be added to or re-positioned every few tourist seasons.

I like your shots from Greece especially when posted in winter !
What colors and luminosity again and a superb contrast between blue, sea and sky, with the white house
Would not be as good if the piece of wood on the ground was anything else than blue

An image that makes one think that it is time to start planning the summer holidays:-) You have framed the shot very well, making judicious use of the vertical format. I like very much the contrast between the graphical elements in the bottom part of the image and the seascape beyond. Very pleasantly lit with superb colours and sharpness. Have a pleasant weekend.

Hello Brian,

Fun subject with this old wood boat lost far away from the sea we could see in bakcground. And it is this composition with a large part given to the sea which is making the interest of the shot, evidencing how it is so strange.

this is a superb picture, the whites and blues contrast very nicely. i love the inclusion and positioning of the boat, it is so full of character and very attractive. the background scenery is also a wonderful feature of the image with the views overlooking the sea.

Well composed, layered shot, Brian. The clarity is sharp as far out as the eye can see, and that adds a lot to the shot, with some beautiful soft light falling on the land in far BG. Up close, you captured the unique nature of this tourist attraction well. I do like that shots that have appeared multiple times on TE, though I haven't yet see any others of this boat; it's interesting to see the take multiple people have had on the same subject. Thanks for adding yours.

Hi Brian, great image from this iconic island. Inclusion of the island and cruise ship work well creating good depth. I wonder about the inclusion of the textured wall in the FG though - perhaps a little distracting? cheers, Steve

I like the idea of the old boat on the white rooftop.
the blues are beautiful. The cruise ship in the same dioganal position as the rowingboat makes the compostion complete!

Hello Brian - The 'stranded' boat seem to look out over the water and watch the other vessels cross the waters. I like the way the positioning of the little boat connects with the sea and its former life! Nicely seen and a bright summery shot for those living in winter weather. Enjoy your weekend. Rosemary

Excellent shot. Quintessential Santorini seascape but a bit different from the typical "white church on blue background" one. Great choice of subject, the boat adds something very special to the image.

Hello Brian,

I like the incongruity of this boat sitting on top of that roof' it gives a new perspective to this breathtaking panorama. The curves in the foreground add a feeling of depth and a bit of sensuality. Finally, I also think that the presence of the cruise ship and the yacht provide areal nice echo to this old wreck.
