Photographer's Note

Of course, the villages hanging on the edge of the caldera (Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani, Fira) are really spectacular, but if you ever go to Santorini, you should not miss the less famous and less touristic villages of the inland. Some of them (f.e. Pyrgos, Empoureios, Foinikia) are really beautiful and with some excellent examples of traditional architecture, especially in their old neighborhoods.

This photo is taken in the old part of Pyrgos, which in fact was a "Castelli", one of the 5 small castles built by the Venetians in Santorini, up on a hill. There wasn't much space on the hill, so the locals found some nice "solutions" with arches, galleries and narrow staircases.
