I havn't really posted many photos from Santorini and its beautiful cliff buildings since I returned, so its about time I suppose.
Its a very post-card type of photo, but I have to say that being here in person really doesn't disappoint.
For sure Oia in Santorini was one of the most beautiful places i've ever been to.
What made it even more special was when you'd get up super early. It was as if you had the entire city to yourself - and a few stray dogs :)
Here is an early morning photo, well before most people are up and about.
thanks for looking

The close framing helps concentrate on the essential. The early morning light is ideal to bring out the detail and delicate pastel tones in the architecture.

I'm always amazed at the labyrinthine of Oia. The maze of stairways and alleys makes it so picturesque.
From your chosen POV we get a great view of the town. No house blocks the view of another one.
Very beautiful with the shadow of the mountain slope on the foreground and with the glimpse we catch of the Aegean Sea on top.
Were there many tourists in the month of May?
Best regards, Paul

Bonjour, cher Craig,
Entre ombre et lumière le village étale toute sa beauté. Il faut reconnaître que l'ensemble est magnifique.
Quel régal architectural.
Une image très réussie.

I only made a short excursion to Oia. It looks pretty much the same as Fira, only smaller and possibly more quiet. Most holiday-makers don't get up very early, unless there is a nice beach very nearby, so it's not surprising you had the village to yourself. The light is definitely at its advantage at this time and doesn't destroy the view with any sharp contrasts. This was a perfectly chosen time for taking pictures.
All the best,

Probablement le village le plus photogénique sur la planète. Une très belle lumière pour le mettre en valeur. Une très belle diagonale dans l'image et de bien jolies couleurs.

The chaotic and as it seems without planning, way of the greek builder come perfectly across in this wild shot of Oia. I should know as my mother lives in southern Greece for over 15 years now. Pleasant early morning shot though.
have a great sunday

One of my favourite times to photograph is early morning before the world comes to life, it allows the beauty of the built environment to shine through so well, and there are few places with better such beauty than here. Amazing how many of the buildings have the curved or domed roofs, which really gives the place a soft feeling, especially combined with the bright and the pastel colors. With the way you have placed the shadow in the scene, I am half expecting the scene to come alive, and watch as the sunlight moves across the view.
Really nice place and photo, thanks as always.

bellissima diagonale colorata, contribuisce anche l'ombra a definire la linea.
Bel luogo e bella foto.

Beautiful labyrinth built village on the slopes, and well collected the sight, Craig.
Contrast between shaded area and lit houses, added to the sense of early hour picture taken.
An intriguing location to any photographer.

hey Craig, after the craziness of the World Cup here in Rio, Oia is the place that I'm dreaming off to have some relaxing and vacation time...I wish I could to my Greece right after here...

Hello Craig - I think one must be up and out early in places like this as it must be teeming with people later in the day. Here it looks as if you had the place to yourself and could wander the streets unhindered and able to choose the best possible views for a postcard style shot. The pastels imparted by the soft light are warm and pretty and here we see the variety of forms and shapes that make up this fabulous place.
Lovely... a scene to delight even the most jaded of travellers.

You are so dedicated to the early morning shots and for good reason, here, the sun is entering the shot like a person pulling back the curtains at a window.
The buildings create a fine diagonal composition, mainly of the typical Greek blue and white, but with a few rich reds and yellows added into the mix. I just love this concentration of buildings on the steep hillside which speaks of neighbourliness, determination and a joint spirit!
My warm regards,

Truly amazing postcard from Oia! The hill with white and yellow houses looks superb attractive and beautiful and you took the moment perfectly to get a superb composition without people. Well seen and done! Like it!

This is a shot which I'm sure will certainly appeal to Brian (timecapturer) as he loves Santorini.
Much to be said about rising early and getting out and about with your camera before anybody else crawls out of their beds - especially if you can capture scenes like this. The light is beautifully soft at this time and I imagine that, within less than an hour of your taking this, the sun was blazing down, the white buildings were reflecting the light very harshly and the shadows were as black as ink.
A beautiful composition with nice diagonals running from bottom left upward to top right and with a lovely view across the buildings to the distant sea. Gorgeous soft light and colours and exquisite details and sharpness.

I really like this puzzle picture! A mix of different shapes and solids, very nice amphitheatre location of houses, very well captured and composed

well done for handling light in this picture. The details are beautifully presented in shadowed areas as well as in these lit by sun. Good choice of POV and well planned framing. I very much like the pastel colors which enhance the atmosphere of the quiet morning.
Thanks for sharing

This is the most beautiful island on the earth agreeably. You must have a wonderful time there. The morning sun light is softly touching the colorful building. It's a very nice picture.

A very attractive village and your picture reminds me of a cubistic painting, with all the small squares in various colours. An attractively composed picture.
chawax (18395) 2014-07-14 10:16
There is so much sun in this place it is a good idea waking up early to take the most of the first light of the day. The light is very soft here, very nice !

Ce village est vraiment très photogénique. Ta composition "en cascade" est excellente.

Good frame quality

an early bird catches the worm :)
Great light indeed and nice empty streets. I like the blue domed church it adds a nice element to focus on, and also you have a sea on the horizon which reminds about the fantastic location of this town.

I am glad you made the effort to get away from Fira / Thera, which is more crowded and touristed and not as photogenic imho. It does not disappoint either. I was lucky enough to visit it last year. Good sharpness and amazing repetition of the patterns and shapes. Turks asked me why there are so many churches in Santorini. They laughed when I answered that I would prey a lot too if I lived on top of a dormant volcano. Apparently it exploded violently around 3600 years ago and the hot springs on the new island are still very active. TFS!
ourania (25532) 2014-07-30 1:43
this view is well known but always enjoyable, as the changes of lighting angle and intensitiy offer marvelous plays with colours and details. In your photo I like very much the tight composition that brings us close to the village but also allows for some also characteristic context, with the rocks, sea and sky as backdrop. Details and colours are delightful and interesting. You managed the soft morning light and the retreating shade very skillfully. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
