Photographer's Note

Oia is on the northern tip of Santorini volcano, which last exploded around 3,600 years ago and effectively ended the Minoan civilisation in Crete. (There are also Minoan ruins on Santorini, and the huge tsunami generated by the explosion and the deposits of ash which covered crops, meant the few Minoans left had to move). There is now a smaller, active cone and hot springs within the caldera but it's much gentler. The violent eruption of Santorini so long ago is sometimes linked to the destruction of Atlantis. Oia is far superior to Fira for photography imho, and the fort that this is taken from is one of the best places on the island for a sunset.
