My take on probably the two most photographed windmills in Greece, if not perhaps the world. Sitting atop the white walled and picturesque village of Oia on the island of Santorini. They are in pristine condition and part of the various hotels that are set amongst the streets and traditional houses of the beautiful old village.

A great sight with both windmills between the houses.
I like the composition with the many lines of walls, houses and stairs of this typical and wonderful Cycladic architecture.
I also love the feeling of the labyrinth type of construction.
Excellent clarity, sharpness and colours.
Best regards, Paul

a very well composed and framed picture of Oia captured at a fine hour of the day. The strong afternoon light from that angle bestows a fascinating graphic effect on the picturesque view. There's excellent clarity, a wonderful range of subtly varied chromatic tones and amazing contrasts. The details of the architecture are perfectly highlighted. I like the detail of the two silhouettes by the highest windmill. Well done and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,

Classic blue and white Greek image. Oia has gone upmarket considerably since I was last there in the early '80s: back then it had a half-abandoned atmosphere, with many empty cave dwellings. Mind you, we walked the streets on a Sunday morning, and I expect many of the residents were in church. Both of them. This image is beautifully proportioned, with the diagonal of the hillside slicing across in a pleasingly dynamic fashion.

White on white on blue. A shot full of subtle colour shifts and lovely light management Brian. The contrast is particularly appealing to me, it gives good definition to the forms and shapes of the buildings. A fabulous shot, simple but with a high quality and visual appeal. Have a good weekend Rosemary

White & blue, the traditional & national colours of Greece! Good exposure on the highlights with negligible oe. I like the windmill at right soaring over the rest of the tightly clustered architecture. Impeccable sharpness & tight framing. Tfs!

the windmills sit wonderfully amongst the little houses. the patterns of the buildings all sitting on top of one another, with the interplay of light and shade are fantastic. the blue sky, and equally appealing blue sea are an amazing backdrop to the bright whitewashed walls.

It looks like a toy town for a children game. Outstanding composition, perfect sharpness, wonderful contrast. Just a Greece flag colors. TFS!
Have a good weekend!

I like the way these windmills are surrounded by the houses. The blue sky makes a nice background and perfect color contrast against the white foreground. The image is very well lit with sharpness. The tall windmill dominates the scene.

Oia is an endless source of beautiful views and photos and this one is just another fine example.
The light here enhances the shapes of the houses and gives us a 3D feeling.
Don't know who had the idea for this buildings and its shapes but surelly someone very creative as such a mixture of shapes and colors seems to fit like if it were planned home by home.

Hello again Brian,
Wonderful composition from the most beautiful Greek island, beautiful view to the Oia with the famous windmills, excellent light management and contrast, very good clarity and sharpness, very nice POV, TfS!
Royaldevon (24342) 2012-04-21 9:42
Oh, so Greek, so beautifully blue and white, so sharp and with fine light control on those white buildings.
Perfectly composed with the sea absolutely horizontal.
It reminds me so much of a toy town. My son would endlessly build windmills and square houses, at different heights, from boxes and cylinders. Ah, but the steps would have defeated him!
Have a lovely w/e,

I've never been to this area, so i can only go by these photographs, but it would seem that its hard to take high quality shots with this strong light and highly reflective white sheen on the buildings.
I'm always impressed with the exposure levels of your shots from this area.
great to view as always.

Good morning Brian,
fascinating the view as the presentation of this well known part of Oia,with the traditional windmills to dominate on the hill.I like the contrast of the colours, as the brilliant light and colour management of the scene.
Have a good Sunday,Danos

I can understand why these windmills are such popular photographic subjects and you have caught them here in wonderful light which really "models" them and their surrounding buildings perfectly.
Gorgeous colours, perfect exposure and contrasts and exquisite detail and sharpness. There's so much to look at and examine in this lovely picture!
delpeoples (50695) 2012-04-22 4:59
Hi dear Brian
No wonder they're the most photographed windmills in the world. And your version is as good as any I;ve seen. Superb management of the strong light and wonderful contrasting colours. The "landscape" here is absolutely stupendous. Congratulations.
carlosmarin (11954) 2012-04-22 11:46
There are many pictures of Oia, its architecture, its mills and churches. But each has his own vision of the author.
This your image is extraordinary, for the composition, color and sharpness.
