Dinning in Mykonos, a photo from Kyklades, South Aegean

Photographer's Note

Mykonos is one of the most famous tourist destination of Greece, if not of the entire world. Well known for its crazy nights, wild parties that last till next noon, but everything starts with a lovely dinner at one of the many nice (and very expensive) restaurants of the island. Mykonos is so famous that many people (especially in the States) still think that Greece is some country close to Mykonos.

Till last week I had never been there, because I hate all this "circus" of celebrities, "rich and famous", fashion victims and paparazzi thing, and most of all I hate crowded places. I must admit, though, that Mykonos deserves much of its glamour and fame, because Hora, the capital of the island is one of the most beautiful villages of the Aegean, with the traditional architecture of Kyklades prevailing everywhere with almost no signs of the modern concrete monsters seen in other places in Greece. You can also find many excellent beaches, although most of them are "packed" and some wild, arid landscapes in the inland.

***This is the first photo that I upload taken with my new camera, a Canon EOS 30D. I hope that this will be a good start.

Two different focus, and both are wonderful. But i prefer the top side, it has shown the beautiful ship with the soft colours from the light and rainbow colours as background. The smoke really make it more impressive. Great one and tfs

Γειάσου Ηρακλή, το εκπαιδευμένο βλέμα φάινεται ξεκάθαρα από τον τρόπο που το καδράρισες.
Η όλη σύνθεση συνηγορεί στο πιο πάνω, το φως είναι επίσης πολύ καλό και ειδικά τα χρώματα της θάλασσας και του ουρανού πολύ όμορφα.

It's definitely a good start. A very moody photo, the diafragm well used to create a nice appearance on the lights of this restaurant. With two seconds exposure, I would expect more movement on the people, but they seem to have been sitting really still, most are tack sharp. I like that. The approaching ferryline/cruiser adds necessary extra detail and mood on the sea, without it, the photo would have less strenght. Great POV, timing with the boat and people.
Exposure and contrast well in order, fortunatly no overexposure at all. Very good detail aswell!

Congratulations with the 30D, you also have a new cam! One to be jeaulous on (for it's fabulous dynamic range and low noise at high ISO's!)
I'm busy with ordering this 28-75 for my Pentax too..partially thanks too..

..well fill it in :)

I'd love to have a dinner there this summer!

oh i m so jelaous again giritli mou... i was there around this time last year and would love to go back again for the third time... but no chance as we re having a baby in 10 days... next sumer i hope...

typical of you, a blue hour masterpiece again... the restaurant is the "sea satin market" (caprice) i guess (or may be not?)... mmm, good food that costs a lot, but hey, this is mykonos, nothing is for free>:)...

I have the same undecided feeling about Mikonos. I'm not crazy about going there because of that same circus you talk about. On the other hand, I'd give it a try, jus to see it for real.
I like the redish light over the terrace. It take the mind to last century's Paris.
The big boat floating over the pic makes me smile, thinking if there's more space left for even more people...

Magnifico juego de luces y colores. Es como un mosaico, o como un caleidoscopio que se ordena por un momento. Las luces del cielo y del mar son magníficas, muy bien realzadas o acompañadas por las luces del crucero y con un primer plano también interesante! Estupenda foto! Gracias.

καλορίζικη η καινούργια σου EOS 30D.Εξαιρετική η απεικόνιση του δειλινού με τα τραπεζάκια επάνω στο κύμα.Μπορεί κανείς να λέει για την Μύκονο όλα αυτά που γράφεις στο σημέιωμά σου,αλλά από απόψεως φωτογραφικής είναι η χαρά του φωτογράφου.Μόλις χθές γύρισα και εγώ απ'εκει μετά από μιά 5ωρη παραμονή.Πραγματικά ενθουσιάστηκα.

Another extraordinary sight with the people dining against the cruise ship. Seems like nobody moved for those two seconds. I like the color and composition. But the WB seems to need some tweaking as the color at the restaurant is too warm. I'm having a similar problem with incandescent light. Regards,

Καταρχήν μεγιά η μηχανή. Και συ βρε παιδάκι μου, Canon βρήκες να πάρεις; ;)

Πραγματικά εξαιρετική η Χώρα (μόνο αυτή πρόλαβα να δω τις λίγες ώρες που ήμουν εκεί πρόπερσυ) και πανέμορφος ο τόπος, ο άνυδρος και γεμάτος γρανίτη αλλά πόλος έλξης τόσο αστεριών και μη. Εξαιρετική και η πρώτη σου φωτογραφία. Οι μηχανές αλλάζουνε αλλά το ταλέντο μένει...

Hi Hercules, i well remember that wonderful sunset in Mykonos, but at that time there weren't cruise ships on te bay!

tu primer trabajo aquí con esta magnífica EOS 30D nos ofrece una bella toma a la hora azul, tu gran especialidad. En la composición combinas el efecto del gran barco iluminado frente al horizonte en la puesta de sol, con el atractivo de esta terraza suavemente iluminada y con un gran ambiente para una cena agradable mientras se disfruta de la maravilosa vista sobre el mar.

Hi Hercules,
I like the way the pinkish, redish light on the diners at the restaurant matches the pinkish redish colour in the sky, and the string of lights above the diners matches the string of lights on the ship. I like also that the image has almost two distinct sections but yet work really well together and are tied together by simple elements such as the lights. Nicely seen and well photographed.

Another beauty! The colours in the sky are so beautifully mixing with each other. I like the way you framed the ship in this composition. The clarity is so much that the faint smoke of the ship is also visible. Great work.

El único motivo para no incluir la foto entre mis favoritas es que no me quedan más a escoger.
Eso lo primero a decir, pero lo segundo: antes de leer la foto me he dado cuenta que estrenas cámara (y menuda cámara).

La foto me parece preciosa y llena de una gran fuerza. Tiene dos zonas muy diferenciadas, la parte inferior con el restaurante y la parte superior con el barco.
Eso hace que la foto sea todo un trabajo de artesanía. Pero reconozco que veo la foto y me quedo admirado: la exposición, además de ser de dos segundos, no puede ser nada sencilla.
¿Hay algún tipo de postprocesado especial?
¿Cuánto ayuda la cámara a tener una foto como ésta?

Another of your early night shot with these absolutely incredble colors. I think the composition you realized is superb and the shutter speed is just optimal to get the splendid light without having problems because of people moving. Impressive one! I'm sure the owners of the restaurant would love to have this image to advertise!

Ηρακλή καλησπέρα.
Αυτό που μου αρέσει περισότερο στην φωτογραφία σου, εκτός βέβαια απο τα τα καταπληκτικά χρώματα, είναι ο συνδυασμός του ακριβού Restaurant στο πρώτο πλάνο και του τεράστιου τουριστικού πλοίου στο πίσω μέρος. Κατά την γνώμη μου είναι πολύ εντυπωσιακή σύνθεση.
Κατά τα άλλα συμφωνώ απόλυτα με τα γραφόμενα σου, αλλά τι να κάνουμε? αυτή είναι η Μύκονος.

ΤΟ θεμα ειναι οτι κι εγω με ολα αυτα τα ψευτοδηθεν και ολα τα ανουσια που εχω ακουσει και προβαλλουν για τη Μυκονο δε θα σπαταλουσα το χρονο μου για να την επισκεφθω.
Βεβαια αν δεν εχεις ιδια εμπειρια δεν μπορεις να κρινεις.
Εσυ εδω καταφερες να παρουσιασεις(ως συνηθως)ενα πολυ ομορφο κομματι της επισκεψης σου.Χρωματα,συνθεση που μαγευοουν και ελκυουν.
Μια ατμοσφαιρα προσιτη και μαγευτικη.
