Everyday I learn new things on TE, often from my own photos too! This picture was taken during my flight from Leros to Athens a few days ago and trying to compose a note for my posting I found out about the existence of the island at the bottom, I had never noticed or heard of it!... It's called Rineia of Mykonos (the big island in the distance) and is next to Delos (on the right). I found some information on Wikipedia but it was only in Greek so I tried to translate it. Mykonos and Delos are much more famous and there's a lot of information about them.
I'm afraid the aeroplane's window wasn't as clear as I would like it to be. I apologise for the quality of the image.
Delos (on the right)
The island of Delos, near Mykonos, near the centre of the Cyclades archipelago, is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. The excavations in the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean; ongoing work takes place under the direction of the French School at Athens and many of the artifacts found are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Delos and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium before Olympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis.
Rineia (bottom of the frame)
There are traces of habitation on Rineia from the 5th millennium B.C. Later the island stayed in the shadow of neighbouring sacred Delos. In 530 B.C. tyrant Polycrates of Samos conquered the island and dedicated it to Apollo. This is the first historical report we have of Rineia. When the Athenians imposed a clearance on Delos, during the Peloponnesean War, and after their decision that no births or deaths should be allowed on the sacred island, Rineia became a vast necropolis. It was also a sanatorium for very ill people, not allowed to stay on Delos any longer. With the decline of Delos, Rineia was abandoned. Today it is only used as grazing land for herds transferred from neighbouring Mykonos.
Mykonos is a Greek island, part of the Cyclades, lying between Tinos, Syros, Paros and Naxos. The island spans an area of 85.5 km2 (33 sq mi) and rises to an elevation of 341 m (1,119 ft) at its highest point. There are 10,134 inhabitants (2011 census) most of whom live in the largest town, Mykonos, which lies on the west coast. The town is also known as Chora . […] Tourism is a major industry, and Mykonos is particularly renowned for its cosmopolitan nightlife; many international celebrities visit the island every summer.
In ancient times, Mykonos, due to its proximity to the then highly populated island of Delos (situated about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) away), became very important as a supply island and possibly as a getaway location for Delian citizens.
In Greek mythology Mykonos was the location of the battle between Zeus and the Titans, and the island was named in honor of Mykons, son of Anios who was a son of Apollo and nymph named Rio.
Thank you for visiting, a lovely week to all

I love photos taken from the flight. You've captured it very nicely with mount of the window.
Thank you very much for sharing.
Let us share our world to each other.

You have yto be somewhat lucky to have a clean window-seat on an airplane, not scratched also.
You did a fine photo, managing the light superbly, and discovering new lands...
I always try to compass myself when flying from Israel - almost any flight goe's above some Greek islands, and always quize myself about.
Have a nice Sunday,

Ciao e buona domenica

the contrast between the black and the intense blue of the sea dotted by islands creates a very beautiful view.It almost looks an image taken from a "satellite".Very well done.

The Aegean Sea is absolutely wonderful when you can admire it from high in the sky. When taking a flight over the Aegean one should certainly ask to sit at the window.
The rugged coastline is very beautiful and I really love the view of that narrow isthmus at the bottom of the picture.
Gorgeous colour contrast between land and sea.
Best regards, Paul

Wonderful view of these islands from the window of a plane
So many islands in Greece, maybe there are some islands with no name!
Have a nice day

Une très belle manière de nous montrer ton pays de très haut. On reconnait bien la forme des iles sur la mer d'un bleu superbe.

bella idea e bella proposta.
Una cornice insolita a racchiudere delle macchie di colore che la natura a formato nel corso dei millenni.

This is brilliant, like looking over a map. I have always loved the craggy coastlines of these Greek islands and this image shows exactly why. The variations in colours of blue around the coasts is cool, and the whole scene is framed perfectly by the airplane window. Really well done. Thanks also for the effort in translating the text on the islands :)
All the best

I think this is a new POV for you, at least on TE. The exposure of the islands far below is perfect and the sharpness is good, considering the conditions. I really appreciate that you included parts of the wall, which allows us to see the aerial view inscribed in this irregularly shaped oval, surrounded by darkness. Watching the islands from above is interesting and fascinating, but this way you also presented us with a good composition and put your personal stamp on the photo. Not bad at all :-).

The cleanliness of the window is irrelevant. There is little point trying to get a sharp, clean image out of an airplane window. What I like about this is that, firstly, you have not tried to give us a typical "out the window form a plane" shot. Secondly, you have thoughtfully used the window as a frame within the frame and it is the shape of the window and the patterns of the islands, and the shadows contrasting with the light that make this a more two dimensional abstract style of image and that's precisely why I like it!

This is an excellent shot seen from the aircraft minus the window glare. An exciting aerial view brightly colored and smart way to include the window frame full of highloights down below. A well done photo work, TFS

I too love to get the lay of the land from low-flying airplanes. You had spectacularly clear atmospheric conditions to be able to capture Mykonos and Delos, the two islands I know in the assemblage, although my favorite is Santorini. A few years ago somebody on TE presented a map-like aerial shot of Venice that I downloaded, but cannot find anymore.
Warm regards and have a good Sunday,
