Super Ferry 2 in 6 beaufort

Shot on the Super Ferry 2 during our Cycladic tour, while on our way from Naxos to Rafina, a 6,5 hour journey. Due to wind force 6 beaufort, the passengers had left the exposed top deck. The ferry was turning, getting ready to enter Mykonos harbour and listed nicely during this manoeuvre.

Some background information:
One of the nice things of touring the Cyclads (which we did for almost a month) is that you get to ride all kinds of interesting ferries. And when you choose Rafina as starting point, you can choose between the services of 5 ferry companies which together offer a versatile timetable. Another benefit is that Rafina is just a short bus trip away from Athens' main airport.

The Superferry II was our favourite ferry. It's s a beautiful classic style vessel with lots of open public deck space. It was build in Belgium in 1974 by Boelwerf as the 'Prince Laurent' for the state owned RTM company for their Oostende - Dover channel service. It was sold in 1992 to Greece and modernized & converted (new bows, design tweaks to the superstructure).

It's operated by a very young company (start: March 2011): Golden Star Ferries that was formed by people of Andros (Andros has a rich seafarers and ship owners tradition), wanting to enhance the ferry service to their island. They bought the ship from market leader 'Blue Star Lines' for 4,3 mil Euro. After the finalisation of their business plan and the purchase of the ship, the fuel prizes and taxes rose dramatically (43%) due to the financial crsis of Greece and the company has a tough time breaking even. The operating costs of the ship are 28.000 Euro per day and the first months the revenue was only 8.500 Euro. The owners expect to do better when the tourist season begins and have confidence in the economic viability of their venture (Source: Cyclade Magazine, June 211).
(I wrote the above text a year ago and upon preparing this pic for posting I saw that Golden Star Ferries is still in operation, so the owners must have been right. A fine exmaple of Greek entrepreneurship.)

This is the start of a Cycladic travelogue which will invoilve the islands of Andros, Tinos, Naxos and Santorini. I'll be posting pictures out of sequence.
