Photographer's Note

This is Mandrakia one of the typical seaside settlements with "Syrmata", which you can find all around Milos and other islands of Kyklades. What is "syrmata"? These tiny buildings you see in the photo are called like this because they have a special mechanism to "syroun" (=draw) the boats inside during the winter. Sometimes they have two floors (each floor never bigger than 20-25 square meters, and some other times (like the one in the foto) they built in a cave. During the summer the inhabitants of the inland, put their boats in the sea and use "syrmata" as summer "villas". Only the absolutely necessary (a bed, a table, two chairs and a small kitchen) fit in there. I like to call them the "apotheosis of minimalism".
