Photographer’s Note

A short break to my Nisyros series (have some more to upload from that magnificent island), to post a photo from Symi island, as an "appetizer" for the next "serie" when Nisyros is over.

Symi's capital is an architectonic jewel, diferent from most of the towns and villages of the Aegean. Its neoclassical caracter can be compared only with the towns of Ermoupolis in Syros island and Mytilini in Lesvos island, but Symi is the only totally unspoiled by the concrete invasion.

In fact Symi town is two towns, the seaside part called "Gyalos" and the part that's on the hill on the left of the photo (not visible here) called "Horio".

The main reason to make this break to my Nisyros "series" was the will of Nick Ifantis ( Ifanik ), to whom I dedicate this photo, for two reasons:
1. Because he loves this beautiful island and has done an excellent job in photographing it (also George (Budapestman) has taken some terrific photos from Symi).
2. Because while in Symi I understood very well how small this world is and Greece even smaller. Let me explain: I was walking one day in Symi and I stopped a man to ask him about where the Nautical Museum was. When he turned towards me, we both freezed. He was Giannis (John) Kolokythas, a friend who I had not seen since year 2000. We had lost tracks of each other, and I didn't know that he lived in Symi, married to a wonderful Symian lady. Giannis and I had shared a dificult period of 5 months, passing the toughest training of the Greek Army in the School of Reserve Officers of Infantry (Σ.Ε.Α.Π.= Σχολή Εφέδρων Αξιωματικών Πεζικού ή Σήμερα Έρχεσαι, Αύριο Πεθαίνεις ή Σκατά Έρχονται Από Παντού).

After some talking, I don't know how the discussion came to Trekearth, and then he told me that Nick Ifantis ( Ifanik ), is his best friend, and that some pictures that Nick had uploaded was from Giannis' wedding (for example check here) !!!

Unbelievable?

So, besides Nick, I would like to dedicate this photo to our common friend, Giannis! I was extremely happy to see him!

PS. I was very hard to resize this photo for the needs of TE...
