Photographer’s Note

The entrance of Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes.

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes is a palace in the town of Rhodes, on the island of Rhodes in Greece. The palace was built in the 14th century by the Knights of Rhodes (now officially known as the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta), who occupied Rhodes from 1309 to 1522. After the island was captured by the Ottoman Empire, the palace was used as a fortress.

The original palace was largely destroyed by an ammunition explosion in 1856. When the Kingdom of Italy occupied Rhodes in 1912, the Italians rebuilt the palace in a grandiose pseudo-medieval style as a holiday residence for Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, and later for Benito Mussolini, whose name can still be seen on a large plaque near the entrance.

On 10 February 1947, the Treaty of Peace with Italy, one of the Paris Peace Treaties, determined than the recently-established Italian Republic would transfer the Dodecanese to the Kingdom of Greece. In 1948, Rhodes and the rest of the Dodecanese were transferred as previously agreed. The Greeks converted the palace to a museum.

Το Παλάτι του Μεγάλου Μαγίστρου των ιπποτών ή Καστέλο βρίσκεται στην βορειοδυτική πλευρά της μεσαιωνικής πόλης της Ρόδου στο ψηλότερο σημείο του κάστρου και αποτελεί το σημαντικότερο ίσως μνημείο της περιόδου των ιπποτών.

Κατασκευή απο τους Ιππότες

Το Παλάτι του Μεγάλου Μαγίστρου είναι κτίσμα του 14ου αιώνα που κατασκευάστηκε από τους Ιωαννίτες ιππότες ,οι οποίοι κατείχαν τη Ρόδο από το 1309 έως το 1522, στη θέση παλαιότερης βυζαντινής ακρόπολης του 7ου μ.Χ αιώνα. Το παλάτι εκτός από διοικητικό κέντρο των Ιπποτών και κατοικία του Μεγάλου Μαγίστρου ήταν επίσης έδρα της άρχουσας κοινωνικής και πνευματικής τάξης της Ρόδου.

Τουρκοκρατία

Όταν κατέλαβαν το νησί οι Οθωμανοί χρησιμοποίησαν το μισοκατεστραμμένο από την πολιορκία παλάτι ως φυλακές ενώ το τελειωτικό χτύπημα δόθηκε το 1856 όταν μετά από έκρηξη πυρομαχικών που φυλάσσονταν στα υπόγειά του το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του καταστράφηκε.

Fine view of this famous historical site. A great POV, with the classical "human adds scale" property, lively colors and some fine details. The angle is just wide enough to manage. Wonder what it would look like with a wider one.

Your shot shows the massive walls and entrance very well against the blue sky. the proportion of sky shown is well judged - and it forms an interesting shape. The shaded wall on the left introduces contrast and the figure is perfectly placed.

of the castle gives scale to the scene. Noting
the architecture of this place brings me back

The castle definitely looks very grand and really reflects the times when horsemen, arrows and swords were used. You have done a very unique composition here because the shadow cast on the wall at left disappeared at the edge as if it is cut.

The 2 pillars of the entrance is a symbol of solid strength of the castle and it is very interesting to find out why the pillars are placed here, not at the ends. Good work!

It's wonderful to see that the palace has been so well restored. It looks so imposing that at first I thought you took it from a low POV. Now I'm not so sure as the man in the gateway looks tiny by comparison. The unusual POV works well with the wall and the tree on the left.

The point of view is allowing us to see the details and colors of the different elements of the architecture of the castle. The picture i sclear and sharp.
