Photographer’s Note

Mandraki Harbor,Rhodes

Mandraki harbor was the main as and military harbor of ancient Rhodes for almost 2,500 years,and its mouth could be shut off by chains. Now the mouth is adorned by statues of a male and female deer ( Elafos and Elafina) symbols of the island - which stand on columns.It is believed that the Colossus of Rhodes was standing there, a Rhodian symbol of strength and wealth. The harbor with its millionaires' yachts, moored alongside quaint, old fishing boats is an unspoilt place, lined by seaside Cafes. Mandraki is used by boats which leave here every day for short cruises to nearby islands and to bathing places on Rhodes. On the long breakwater front at Mandraki stand the three medieval windmills which ground the grain unloaded from merchant vessels in the harbor.

Colossus of Rhodes

one of the seven wonders of the world, was built around 304 BC by Chares the Lindios (from Lindos), in honor of Apollo the god of the sun (Helios in Greek) and patron god of Rhodes. It stood one hundred feet tall and it was located at the entrance of Mandraki harbor. Made entirely of bronze, it was then used as a lighthouse. It symbolized the strength and wealth of the Rhodian people.

It is believed to have been destroyed in 226 BC by a powerful earthquake. Later the pieces, it is believed, to have been taken by the Egyptians.

Très jolis contrastes avec l'entrée du port. J'y suis allée il y a plus de trente ans mais j'ai cette image bien en mémoire.

Great shot, Danos,
the sunset light create a wonderful atmosphere giving beautifully worm colour to the fortress. I like also how the black silhuette of the two columns with the statues stand out from the bright sky. And last but not least: wonderful reflections on the water. A composition which recreates very well the end of the day in this magical harbour.

I like the graphical effect that you have obtained in this capture, taking advantage of the so low light of the Sun to divide the image in an illuminated part and other one in the shade.

The golden light illuminating on the port is fantastic here, and the reflection and water is mesmerizing with it’s glimmering lights. Beautiful sky with soft colors, contrasting very well with the port and the silhouettes of the statues of the deer and couple of people playing. I do remember one of your photo from the same place, but with a closer approach on the statues.
you spotted just on time the light which gave golden tonalities to the fortress and on the mast of the boat. It made an interesting contrast with the darker areas. The reflection is a nice detail to look!

The height of the sun is just perfect, making the castle stand out wonderfully. The warm tones of the castle and the sky and their reflection on the water is also beautiful, as are the silhouettes of the deers guarding the mouth of the port.
I wonder if a crop below wouldn't render the compo more effective; although I like it the way it is, that crop would accentuate the horizontality.

Hi Danos,

I will probably sound very repetitive but the light is here what makes all the difference. The harbour seems to be like a subject on the stage, illuminated with a spot light as if the director of lights would want to say: look at it in all its glory! I just love seeing motive accented by the light when all what surrounds it is modestly calm in the shadow. With this, the main object, the motive we wanted to show is accented far by the best.

A good light an time of the day for such a photo Danos. The warm light contrasts well to the silhouetted effect of the two deers (of all thing) guarding the entrance to the port. Goes well to the informal note of the place and history.

Your note is very enlightening and makes me remember my history teacher at the school. As a child, tells us stories of ancient Greece, and mentioned the statue of the Colossus of Rhodes as one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world.

The photo is fantastic, has some very attractive colors, and a proper handling of light and shadow. The well-balanced marine horizon, the sky is excellent and well-calm waters, determine a beautiful composition.

I like the silhouettes of columns with deers, the soft (for this mood just optimal) reflections, the colours of the castle. I would like to see it with a bit less shadow on the castle but then perhaps the form of shadow (tower) would be disturbing. Anyway, the photo is convincing of the beauty of Rhodes.

Olá Danos, superb capture of the old fort shining beautifully under the last rays of sunlight. The golden tones make a very attractive picture and you did an excellent framing balancing it with the two pillars that mark the entrance of the harbour. Very nice detail of the animal silhouettes on top and also nice to have a glimpse of the mountains in the horizon. I also like the people seen at left on the pier.

Hi Danos,

The reflections in the water are assets to the composition. The presence of the people has an effect of scale. The point of view leads our eyes toward the horizon which is giving depth to the photo. The colors are enhanced by the quality of the light.

Hi Danos,

I remembered beautiful warm sunset over Rhodes from 32 years ago when we visited this beautiful isle with X-mas and New Year.
Firework was not allowed for there was again a strained situation with Turkey and firework could be provoking, they told us.
