Photographer's Note

A view to the south from Mt Patella, at the west of Leros. We can see the two long capes embracing the huge bay of Lakki, leaving an opening of only 400 metres. In the distance lie the mountains of neighbouring Kalymnos.

Patella (like Cape Katsouni ahead and Mt Skoumbarda in the background) hosts the lot of ruined buildings and tunnels constructed by the Italians for the defense of the island, which they had turned into a naval base of great importance. After the heavy blows they received by bombs during the war, the buildings are now slowly and silently decaying, left to the mercy of time.

A big thank you to friend and great photographer Markos Spanos, who took us there and guided us all over. This is where we left the car. It's a long, steep climb to the top, there is a road but it's covered with sharp stones, so it's safer to climb on foot. So enticing to stop every now and then, enjoy the view and take pictures.

Thank you for visiting, a great week to all
