Photographer's Note

The castle of Leros over the districts of Christos and Pandeli.

The Castle was built in the 11th century and was occupied by Knights, Venetians, Ottomans, besieged by pirates, used as watch post by Italians, British and Germans. It has hosted and protected soldiers, monks and villagers, various stone structures, ramparts, chapels and vaults, today a church and a museum.

People nowadays walk or drive up to the Castle for happy occasions: weddings or christenings at the church of Our Lady or perhaps a concert or a theatrical performance in the summer. It's really worth a visit simply to enjoy the beautiful view over Leros and the seascape around it.

It was exactly 66 years ago, March 7 1948, that Leros and the Dodecanese, the group of islands where it belongs, united formally with Greece.

Thank you for visiting
