The Battle of Leros started exactly 70 years ago and lasted 5 days (November 12-16, 1943). This is one of the many ruined buildings along the ridge of Mount Skoumbarda, at the south of Leros. We're looking to the north, towards the town of Lakki.
Here's a small extract from "The King's Own -- The Story of a Royal Regiment" by Col Cowper
[....] It was about 4.30 a.m, on the morning of November 12, when the light was beginning to grow in the east, that the German invasion fleet was sighted. The Italian coastal guns were powerless to prevent the German troops from being put ashore in Palma Bay and near Pasta di Sopra on the north-east coast of the Buff's' sector, also in Tangeli Bay near Leros town, This last landing was staunchly resisted by the Royal Irish Fusiliers, but although they prevented the capture of the two features of Castle Hill and Mount Appetici, they were not strong enough to drive the enemy back into the sea. evident proof of the war and its cruelty.
Interesting picture to remind us of the past and to show us a part of Greek history.
In this case B&W seems to be the best option to capture authority of the WW2.
Meaningful contribution to TE and superb example of B&W in your gallery.
Wish You a nice evening

As always, you have given us a very interesting and informative note - your notes, especially when it comes to details about the suffering of Greece and the Greek people during WWII - are always comprehensive and heartfelt.
And this wonderfully "gritty" black and white picture paints the scene perfectly. We can imagine the grim and bloody struggle which was fought here.
A fabulous picture with good bold composition, strong tones and contrasts and impeccable details and clarity.

The B&W format enhance the old "look" over the ancient fortress.
View over the bay call for a color version, as the blue sea can creat good contrast - so i had to imagine how this would be in another version.
Anyhow, fine POV from a high location, good sharp image.

I love the antique look of this photo. Very well done! Was this building ruined during the battle?

hello, here is an interesting photo for TE. The field was affected by battle and it left some of its signs here as these ruins. Nice presentation in black & white, which is a perfect choice for it. Great photo quality. Nice one. Tfs.

Kalispera dear Ourania
A haunting and emotional photo. It is often difficult for me to look at the sites of a long ago battle without getting emotional. particularly from WW II. The desolation of the place sets the scene superbly, as does the B&W. This could be an image from 70 years ago. Did you feel a sense of awe and sadness treading this battlefield? I can almost feel it through your image and note.
Compelling, poignant and wonderful, thanks for sharing

I don't know what you have done technically to this photo, maybe nothing really, but the B&W treatment makes it look like it was taken shortly after the beattle. Maybe it's the texture of the ground that gives the photo a grainy effect, although it is not really grainy at all. In any case your treatment was most appropriate and useful.

A very nice choice in black and white, it gives the timeless feel that places like this deserve, a timeless memory of the madness of war. There is a true sense of devastation here, the ruined building and the stones scattered across the landscape, while the scene has beautiful depth as we look deeper across to the mist shrouded mountains beyond.
Interesting note too Ourania, thank you. Of course, the Irish Fusileers caught my eye,. Its amazing how war can make the world so much smaller.
Thanks as always

Nice choice of B&W for this presentation as it adds atmosphere and puts you into that moment in time. Even after all these years we still have the scars of war on the landscape as a reminder of that terrible conflict. Nice high POV showing the view that the defenders had over the battleground and very interesting note on the battle.
All the best,

Sorry I had these not seen, with the ruins.
that you choose for black and white can I best understand, this was a very black period out of our history, war is always a dark time, but people learn not out of the history.
My father they; (1903-1970) birds and wild animals care for a territories, but people are not satisfied with territories, about seem, this shows power!
The man had two Wars survived, but is through an accident deceased.
Very well composition, perfect captured, lovely presentation.
Excellent done, TFS.

A shot makes you stop and think, an incredible place in history and such a story to tell. Mono treatment is suitable, a very fitting tribute and an emotional capture indeed. Lovely as this seems to come to life, well captured all fab and cool detail in it. It's a very poignant and well captured image. Congrats

This ruin at the top of the mountain is perfect to remind people about the war damages. I like a lot the view over the Island, in background. A good photo to remember the date and I really think b&w was a great choice here, looks more like a photo from the old days.
