A picture taken on September 26 aboard gunship Machetis (Fighter) of the Hellenic Navy during the commemoration ceremony for the battleship Vasilissa Olga that was sank in the bay of Lakki in 1943.
The defense didn't give warning and the young but glorious battleship was attacked by three raids of Ju 88 planes and was sank. This tragic event marked a turning point in the already difficult and dramatic situation in the south Aegean. For Leros it meant heavy, daily bombardments that lasted until the Battle of Leros and ended only with its end (November 12-16, 1943).
Every year a ceremony takes place in Lakki at a special monument commemorating Olga's lost crew: CO. Lt. Cdr Blessas HN, 6 officers and 65 petty officers and sailors. Survivor Athanassios Andrianakis was present this year as well.
After the ceremony at the monument, the guests of honour, the officials and some local people board a ship of the Hellenc navy that takes them to the place where vasilissa Olga was sank. Several laurel wreaths are thrown in the sea of Lakki in honour of the ship and her crew.
I was fortunate to be invited this year too as interpreter to seaman Albert Poulter and his wife. Mr Poulter is a survivor of the 7th HMS Intrepid that was sank by the Ju 88 in Lakki the same day as Vasilissa Olga.
I stayed with Mrs Poulter while her husband joined the officials at the ceremony that was taking place on the right, where the people are looking.
Last year I posted a photo of the wreaths in the sea of Lakki:
as well as photos of seamen Andrianakis and Poulter:
Thank you for visiting, a lovely Sunday and week to all

An interesting and poignant story to accompany this well presented image. The ropes in the foreground are well included, giving the scene depth and acting as lead lines toward the group of people. Good technical presentation.

Learning about the world through photography, a perfect example here with your fine historical note to compliment your hoot. A great sense of solemnity from your chosen view which is really suited. Thanks as always

The beautiful sunshine probably helped to make this solemn occasion less stiff and formal than it could have been, considering the tragic events commemorated. Certainly the sunshine, bright colours and the relative absence of dark suits contributed to the fine result of this photo.
I guess you are "the English speaking lady" of Leros :-)? I remember when I was a child (back in the 1950's) my mother used to be called upon whenever an English interpreter was needed (usually when the police had caught a foreigner acting suspiciously). She was probably the only one speaking English in our village in those days.

A good picture of this dignified and interesting ceremony. The picture is well balanced with a line along the railings and through the flags, a line that frames the persons on board.

This is a very nice documentary photo, which presents a great opportunity to retell the story of the tragic event, to keep the memory alive. You have made good use of your time on board this vessel.

Something a bit brighter to light up the day, commemoration is quite an event full of emotion and deep in thought. It's very eye-catching composition, super-saturated colour - such a joyous shade of yellow, blue, red and the rope coils are just inviting the eyes. Guess this is the one remaining day of the year when people do still stop and think, which also leaves us with a question rather than answering it, Great capture and tx to your narratives. Congrats

Excellent snapshot, the photo from "behind the lines". The people are in excellent light, I like the fact that there are not watching you but the speaker. Superb candid shot. Very well done IMO.
