This year is the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Leros and on September 26 we had the commemoration of the sinking of battleship Vasilissa Olga in the bay of Lakki by German planes. HMS Intrepid was also sunk on the same day at a short distance from V. Olga. The sinkings were followed by daily bombardments and great drama in the Aegean. The Battle of Leros (November 12-16, 1943) was lost by the British and Italian defenders of the island and Leros remained under German command until the end of the war.
Among the events commemorating the two occasions was the visit and presentation of five military vehicles which had actually taken part in action in various places during WWII. They were brought over from Athens by members of the Hellenic Military Vehicules Preservation Association (http://www.sdio.gr/Index.php?Language=en.)
The vehicles were displayed at certain spots of the island and were present during the commemoration ceremony and other events. Their owners have done a remarkable work on preservation and have attached to their vehicles very interesting authentic equipment. They were happy to answer questions and provide information for every single detail that would draw people's attention.
Here, the two members of the Association seen on the right are dressed as members of the Sacred Band, a legendary Greek special forces unit.
The Sacred band (Greek: Ιερός Λόχος) was a Greek special forces unit formed in 1942 in the Middle East, composed entirely of Greek officers and officer cadets under the command of Col. Christodoulos Tsigantes. It fought alongside the SAS in the Libyan desert and the Aegean, as well as with General Leclerc's Free French Forces in Tunisia. It was disbanded in August 1945 but is the precursor of the modern Greek Special Forces.
The scene is from the inauguration of a monument in honour of the soldiers from all sides who were executed on Leros during the War. The place is called "Kokkina" (reds) and is an isolated area in the west of Leros. In the distance, a view of the bay of Lakki.
In the WORKSHOP a close up of the brown box, taken earlier that day.
Thank you for visiting

A very good close-up of the figures and their equipment, in a beautiful, warm evening light. The details are pin-sharp .
The more I have thought about these commemorations the more I think we should recognise the sacrifice that these people made and the terrible conditions that they endured, in the hope that we will learn from them and not let it happen again.
My warm regards,

A fine historical scene marking a moment never forgotten. What I really like in this is that there is nothing posed in this at all, you could have travelled back in time and taken this at the battle itself. Love the contrast and light, very nicely done.
All the best

I even don.t know what's time in Europa now. I have often change the time's belts last days.
The sandy uniform looks very attractive in the sunset lights. Good presentation of the historical reconstruction, fine details and very informative note.

Hello dear Ourania,
A perfect capture as if from a historical movie.
I think that one of the reasons of the economic disasters Greece is facing today has it's roots on those days of WW II !
FS and best regards

Ciao Ourania, gran bella ricostruzione di un evento bellico fortunatamente lontano nel tempo, ottima inquadratura, splendida nitidezza anche nel WS di dettaglio, brava, ciao Silvio

A photo interesting from the title till the subject, good to see that Historical themes are not forgotten along with cars, weapons, uniforms
Why the man at the left is so interested in the watch? is it also kept from WW 2?
Well done, congrats
Super interesting the close up of the WS

The legacy of WWII still haunts Europe 70 years later. It's understandable that the major events are still commemorated, although I had the impression such reenactments mainly interested men who wanted to play war without getting hurt. But obviously they're not just for men, since you were there too :-). Personally I find it more important to learn politically from the mistakes of the 1930's and 40's to make sure history won't repeat itself. There are ugly signs all over Europe.
Having said that it's an interesting and lively photo you have taken. The bearded "civilian" shows a keen interest in the brown box, which also makes me - as a distant observer - watch the picture with more interest. It's amazing how all colours go so perfectly well together.

Effective tight framing and a good close up of the soldiers commemorating the murder of Greek & other soldiers by the Nazis in WW2. The red and yellow color tones contrast well against the blue sea in the bg. Excellent sharpness and a good photojournalistic shot from Leros. Tfs!

Thank you so much for your warm welcome back, I have missed my friends here on TE, but the holiday was much-needed and I had the time of my life. Not as many photos as I had hoped, but it was my anniversary, so there were other things to do :)
This photo looks like a still from a film. It is so sharp and well-defined. I love the warm golden light that illuminates these men's uniforms and their olive skin. A wonderful historical document, beautifully and skilfully recorded.
Thanks for sharing, have a lovely evening

Hi Ourania ,
Fine capture of the commemoration of the battle that took place in Leros. Nice lighting and the colours of the kaki uniforms make a nice contrast to the blue sea in the background. The man with the beard and the goggles on his head really looks the part. Very interesting documentary on the history of this beautiful place.

Nice close up on the few people. The evening sun is lovely, painting the scene with warm hues. I like the use of selective focus.

Φοβερή η εικόνα σου. Αν δεν ήταν και ο μουσάτος από τα αριστερά με λίγο σέπια θα είχες μια ιστορική εικόνα!

A nicely close image of a wonderful reenactment scene as if this could have been taken at the actual situation, I'm glad you were there to photograph to share with us with plenty to look at. In particularly I love the almost perfect camouflage of their uniforms, faces and the warm toning give it an old feel of yesteryears atmosphere and it goes well with the subject matter. A well recorded event, a symbolic shot to remember the day and tx to the useful notes Fabulous shot, TFS
