Seaman Athanassios Andrianakis, a photo from Dodekanisos, South Aegean

Photographer's Note

Athanassios Andrianakis is a survivor of the sinking of destroyer Vasilissa Olga in the harbour of Lakki by german diving bombers on 26 September 1943. This year he once again honoured the commemorative ceremony, 69th, and placed a wreath at the monument dedicated to his lost commander and companions.

This photo was taken after the reception given by the Navy at the Officers' Club in Lakki, not far from the monument and the wreck still lying at the bottom of the sea. Everyone stood as the vice-Admiral offered a plaque to Mr Andrianakis who shared with us some of his memories of that day. He spoke of his companions and commander with great respect and fondness.

Hello Ourania,

You have given us a very interesting and also a very emotive note here as well as two wonderful photographs.

Your workshop picture is more of a "documentary" one but your main photograph is a beautiful portrait of this elderly war veteran who has seen more suffering and felt more fear than hopefully any of us will ever experience. Still very smart and bright-eyed despite his age, I love his keen gaze as a younger but serious man in the background looks on - the contrast in their appearances is wonderful.

A great tribute of a very interesting relaxed feel portrait but full of emotions, a vintage stuff indeed and the sole survivor and your narratives makes us appreciate this picture much better. This very moving image says it all perfectly timed, a split second might have lost his expressions, his gaze makes the shot for me. Mr Andrianakis must be a very old man now, but he wears his years with great dignity and I would say beauty. You have taken a very fine portrait where the light has helped you to shape the features of his face. I am sure he will appreciate this photo if he sees it.

Πολύ όμορφο το πορτραίτο του επιζήσαντα από το θρυλικό μας καταδρομικό, από το πλοίο αυτό και 2 μέρες πριν τη βύθισή του, αποστρατεύτηκε ο πατέρας μου σαν προστάτης της οικογένειάς του, αφού μόλις είχε σκοτωθεί ο αδελφός του στο El Alamein!
