Photographer’s Note
Kalamata Harbor, is located at the southest part of the city. Many roads of the city lead there.
I have a huge collection of photos, sometimes I'm confused which one should I post, and I take new shots.
About the shot:
---------------
Typical settings, Aperture Priority program (AP) f/8, ISO 100 at 18mm.
Polarizer filter was used
RAW Post Processing Notes:
--------------------------
I don't know where to start, this one has everything!
- White balance cold shifting
- Extreme high Brightness and contrast values over luminance.
- Luminance layer opacity 20% (You might be wondering, why did I use a rough contrast over luminance layer, and then use only the 20% of the layer itself, instead of using lower contrast values. Simply because some mid tones and dark areas of the scene, was lightened better and sweeter that way).
- HUE Blue tones shifted to magenta, in order soft blue to become dark blue.
- Clone stamp used to remove some objects from the sea
- Cropping align to middle
- Saturation increasment
- Levels adjustment
- Title added
and I don't even remember what else, I just kept looking this one for a while until I got satisfied by it, before I post it.
Those saturated colours were selected on purpose.
The noon hour can't give you such colours, the reflections and the warm tones created by the sun lighting to the houses can't naturally be matched with the deep blue I've created, BUT it gave me a harmonic and lovely colour contrast.
My Opinion:
-----------
I believe this picture has many pictures, combined all together in a big one.
For example:
- The blue sea with the white boat on the right is a picture.
- The city reflections with the sky and the sea is also a picture.
- The ship and the crane at the back left of the photo is another picture itself.
I took each of those pictures separately, but then again something was missing, like hearing a song with one instrument which may be good but not enough.
Now combine all instruments, and put the appropriate happy "colour" in order to hear the music.
A picture may have objects, but a picture can also be defined by colour.
Even most impressive objects and subjects could look wrong, if the colour isn't measured correctly or wrong colours are selected.
Colours itself may be an object or a whole subject to a picture.
In conclusion, this picture was composed, and not taken.
Tip:
----
Don't trust your eyes, the colour and the contrast will create an emotion and it will fool you, don't trust what you see, and don't get excited.
Check the lighting, and your subjects, imagine the best look of the scene, can it be done by some post processing, is a different hour better required? How do you imagine your scene?
and the hardest question of all, you must shot it right now, make it look best, will you? :)
Learn how to use your equipment, for the each scene, and make your best, if you follow the rules even a bad picture to you, is a good to us. You may brake the rules on purpose, this is also a rule.
Hopefully I'll try to explain what rules mean to me in my next posts...
In my opinion there is always an objective, defined by logic, like playing music, reading.
I don't accuse pictures that were taken spontaneously,
in fact those pictures are charming, BUT!! the key is that they follow some rules with or without the knowledge of the photographer at that time.
I hope you enjoy my photo
The Original Version is here, check if you like to see the differences.

Hello! Love your composition, every element in the shot is well placed. Not so keen on the heavy processing though - to me it looks over processed and the colours far too exaggerated. Still, two points because it is basically a good photo.

yup, agree on what Phillip wrote, the composition is great,
every element is very well thought out, but i find the colors
too strong too, and when comparing to the original - there was really much pp done.
anyway, you did a good job with a terrific result. well done & best wishes, thor.

Hi Stelios,
This is a wonderful image of the harbour, and the composition is well thought out. Although the focus in on the foreground boats, the row of colourful houses and apartments lead the eye towards the tanker on the right which balances the frame. The colours you've captured are amazing , and all in all create a very strong picture. Well done.
Cheers Grant

Hello Stelios,
Sharness and contrast on this photo is just perfect. Something that you have established pretty well in your collection.
Thanks for the notes. I am learning from you =)
