Castle of Monemvasia-A byzantine castle situated south-east of Peloponess

Monemvasia occupies a steep, rocky islet connected to the Laconian coast by a bridge. The settlement was founded in the 6th century A.D. by emperor Maurice. The castle that was built and the walls helped the city to keep away the pirates. The inhabitants were sailors and merchands and the city kept its economical development for many centuries. In 1147 the Normands tried to capture it without success. Francs managed to capture it but only for 10 years period.

In 1259 MICHAEL PALAELOGOS liberated Monemvasia and the city had important cultural and economical development until 1460 when the area was captured by the Venetians. In 23 July 1821, after a long siege turks surrendered the castle of Monemvasia to Alexandros Kantakouzenos.
The most important monuments of the city are:
The castle and the walls.
Church of Aghia Sophia built by emperor ANDRONIKUS II PALAEOLOGOS in 13th century.
Church of Christ Helkomenos, with significant icons (you see in the picture here!)
Church of Panaghia Myrtidiotissa built in 17th century.

Another fine view of this interesting and picturesque town and island. I like the sight of both the town and mountain behind. Rich in clarity and textures. Fine contrast and colours.

The rock wall behind this attractive village has an almost unnatural look; very graphical texture. Fine colours and composition!

Hello Georgios,
A very beautiful picture of the centre of Monemvasia with quite a lot of green on the foreground.
The plants and trees contrast nice with the grey of the church and the houses and with the impressive rock behind the village.

Informative note for study the byzantine city, good pov with including old architectures and surrounding environment within a shoot, unique geographical feature as background, foreground trees add perspective to the view, thanks for sharing a beautiful old city.

another great composition. The historical rocky wall is superb. The architecture is great and detailled nicely. The green trees in foreground gives adequate contrast to the grey stones. Your note is also very informative. Tfs.

Lovely area, nice castle this against the slope of the mountain in background.
Perhaps I would to the right little bit cropping, exactly the wall, this is a small detail.
Nice composition, very nice presentation.
