Photographer's Note

Approximately 4 miles long, width about 80 feet, depth 25 feet. The first idea was by Periander (625-585BC)but not a canal but to carve a paved road to drag boats overland. Caligula AD37 sent scientists to look at the possibility of a canal and it was these studies that Nero saw himself splitting the isthmus apart with his bare hands. It was thought Corinthian Gulf in Northwest was higher than the Saronic Gulf in the Southeast and the cutting of the canal would be disasterous for the Island of Aegina which lies in the Saronic Gulf. It was finally opened in 1882.
