Corinth Canal, a photo from Korinthia, Peloponnesus

Photographer's Note

Corinth Canal dug in the years 1881-1893. It crosses the isthmus of Corinth, which combines a basic member of the Balkan peninsula of Peloponnese. Channel length of 6.3 km, a width of 24.6 m and a depth of 7 m of water connects the Saronic Gulf (Aegean Sea) from the Gulf of Corinth. Height of hanging rocks above the water exceeds 70 feet. Attempts to reach ancient canal digging. Before the canal was made, Isthmus of Corinth was used to transport goods by road and ship (!) between points lying on the both sides.

ale miales szczescie ze ten olbrzym akurat przeplywal. Ja tam stalem jakis czas i nic sie nie dzialo ale nawet widok pustego kanalu robil ogromne wrazenie.

wspaniale zdjecie tego kanalu. Niejednokrotnie widzialam to w telewizji na "Travel" kanale. Podoba mi sie i to jest niesamowite i bardzo ciekawe. Super fotka, chcialabym to takze zobaczyc, ale nie da sie wszystkiego. Sliczne zdjecie. Moje gratulacje.

Hello Jozef,
I have no idea how long you have been waiting on the bridge for the arrival of this ship. When I visited the Corinth Canal a few years ago there was no ship in sight and even no train on that other bridge with the railroad. So I decided to wait. And I waited a long time but finally I left with pictures of the canal only but without boats or trains :)
This photo shows well how narrow the canal really is. I also like the contrast between the busy atmosphere on the ship and its many colours and on the other hand the rough, yellow brown walls of the canal.
