Photographer's Note

Freshwater lake, supplied by springs and naturally drained through underground rivers with temporary marshes. It is surrounded by sparsely vegetated hills and Olive stands. The main human activities are agriculture, cattle raising and hunting. The waters of the lake are used for irrigation and for some years the lake is completely drained. Hunting pressure is very intensive at winter.

Breeding species include the Short-toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus (2 pairs), the Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus, the Bonelli's Eagle Hieraaetus fasciatus and the Kingfisher Alcedo atthis. Very important area during spring migration. Migrants include the Little Egret Egretta garzetta (60+), the Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus and several waders and terns.
