Photographer's Note

The Tamarisk is a genus of angiosperms, dikotylon plants belonging to the class of violet, the family Tamaridoeidon.
It saplings are native in many coastal areas of Greece and the Mediterranean, close to beaches, riverbanks and streams where the watery horizon is saltish.
The trees have possible root and branch roots reaching deep. The branches are thin and the leaves are forming numerous scales. The flowers are very small pink or pinkish white, not arranged in long inflorescences and grow at the ends of the branches.
Extremely resistant to drought and soil salinity favored by the spraying of seawater. Grown along the coast as an ornamental, for shelterbelts, but also for his shadow on the beaches
In Latin, the name Tamarix refers to that which comes from the river Tamaris-Tampro located in Spain.
In Greece there are several types, the most important are:
1. Smyrna trees. (Tamarix smyrnensis - the tamarisk smyrnaiiki) shrub or small tree that is no more than 2 meters high. The flowers are of a soft pink color and are found mostly in streams of southern Greece.
2. French trees. (Tamarix gallica ), shrub or small tree. The branches have a reddish color and the flowers are pink. It is located in many coastal areas of France and in Greece on several beaches in the Aegean.
3. Common trees of Attica. (Tamarix hampeana - the tamarisk champeani) tree reaching 10 meters in height and it is located on beaches all over Greece having very dense foliage and tiny flowers of pinkish white color.
4. Cretan trees. (Tamarix parviflora - the tamarisk mikranthis, synonymous of the Tamarix cretica) shrub or small tree that is no more than 3 meters high. The leaves are oblong, dark green and pink flowers. It grows on the banks of creeks, streams and rivers of Crete.

In Greece these trees are called "almyrikia" or "armyrikia".
The picture was taken at the beach of Paralio Astros in Arkadia, Greece and this particular almyriki belongs to the family of the Tamarix cretica.
