Bourtzi by Night II Photo

Photographer’s Note

Still in Nafplio, Bourtzi is the primary photographic target for I shall post many different versions of it, higher lower, different angles, different hours, just to tell you that a subject may have many faces.

About the shot - PP notes:

Okay, I found my spot in the harbor and I set my tripod, No first subject no background subject,
All I wanted was a simple capture looking like this.

Sometimes you may include only one subject in your photo, without foreground and background.
The way you put it, the lighting and the colour can give life to the subject, lead the eye and make it interesting.
This photo is completely against the rules, (horizon not in 1/3 or 2/3, subject centered, false colours) SO what!!!

All I needed in this one was the star effect created with f/16, smooth water and reflection of the lamp created with 15 seconds of exposure, and of course my RAW post processing program, where I enhanced the magentas and the overall saturation.

My SIGMA 70-300mm APO Tele or zoom Lens was used for two reasons.
- 1st, for the 70mm focal range
- 2nd for the 18 star beams which my 18-55 EF-S is not capable of.

No Polarizer, ND8 or UV filters used, those are useless during the night in such cases.

Wonderful night shot! I really like the star effect caused by the lights in the right of the frame. The reflection adds good color and direction to the shot leading the eye into the main subject. You have captured the blue hour very well and have done a great job of blending both natural and artificial lighting to create a great photo.

yes stelio, "horizon not in 1/3 or 2/3, subject centered, false colours", it is even tilted a bot to the right, but who cares... it is still a great shot, very eye-catching and that star rules, for sure...

Some rules must be transgressed, I think (not in Zwniana!). Your photo is the evidence. I wonder you management of light. What I found difficult in night picture is to avoid some overexposed spots. You show us that it is possible. The colours are wonderful.
Only one little thing: it's seems that the sea is not exactly horizontal.

Γειάσου Στέλιο, το αποτέλεσμα υπέροχο, φανταστικό, πολύ με αρέσει.
Οι ακτίνες από τις λάμπες βγαίνουν τοσο εντυπωσιακά που μαζί με τον όλον φωτισμό και τα χρώματα της την βρίσκω πράγματι πάρα πολύ όμορφη.

Hi Stelios,
I think you did a great job. Magentas, golden tones and blues are delicious. What I most like is the star effect. I can never get it as perfect as yours. But then again I've never tried using another lens. I have a 55-200. Do you think it might work? Another thing I'd like to ask is how you were able to use such a small aperture. Was there enough light? My auto focus won't work if there isn't enough light, so I have to use longer exposures than 15 secs and larger apertures. However, then the light diffuses and I can't get the star effect. Did you use manual focus?

Your are Lucky to make this shot and you have done a very good job with the POV , the light , the contrast , when I am in Nafplio 1 year ago I just look Bourtzi and i Dont make shot

My sister was sitting in front of her laptop long time admiring your image,and calling me to come to see it too !And I admit,she was right!!!This is a perfect shot with perfect settings!As she said we tried last night a lot of night shots hoping to get a ...good result ...but we failed !15 seconds/f/16...let's try again ....:)

Οπτική απόλαυση. Καθαρότατο θέμα, σχεδόν το αγγίζεις. Σοφή χρήση του saturation χωρίς να το παρακάνεις.

σου πολύ καλή και αυτή η νυκτερινή παρουσίαση από το Μπούρζι με μια επιφάνεια θαλάσσης που μοιάζει με μετάξι.Οι αντανακλάσεις και γενικά η όλη σκηνή απογειώνουν την φαντασία.
