This square was once the site of the Venetian bastion of Santa Teresa, which was later renamed the bastion of Moschos, and was demolished in 1866.
The monument to the Philhellenes, in other words the friends of Greece, which dominates the center of the square, was competed in 1903, in memory of the French Philhellenes who fought and died for the liberation of Greece from the Turkish yoke during the Greek Revolution.
The monument, is in the form of a memorial stone made of grey marble, and is in the shape of an obelisk, a form highly popular at the time. It was designed in Paris, but constructed in Greece in the marble works of Ioannis Chaldoupis. On one side of the raised base of the obelisk there is a relief in white marble depicting the personalized forms of Greece and France, in the forms of Athena and Liberty respectively. On the eastern side of the base there is an inscription in memory of the great French Philhellenes: Field Marshall Meson, General Fabvier and Admiral Derigny, and all the French sailors and soldiers who fought for Greek Independence.
More recently, a bust was placed on the North West side of the square in the likeness of Mando Mavrogenous, a heroine of the Greek Revolution, who lived in Nafplio from 1824 to 1831.
On the North East side of the square, in King Otto's Street, there is an important two-story Neo-classical building from the 19th century, which belonged to the Iatrou family, who were well known benefactors to the city. The town hall was housed here from 1972 until its recent move to Trion Navarchon Square.
This is the square that we hang out with my friends when I visit Nafplio in Greece, a fine place to walk and a great atmosphere to enjoy.

thanks for sharing and have a nice day.

Bien hecho. Me gusta mucho.
Te deseo pase un bonito dia.
Un abrazo muy afectuoso.

I get a feeling that this picture was taken very early in the morning; long shadows and a deserted square. There is a freshness over this view, fine architecture and very attractive colours. A very interesting note!

Only on my second look at this beautiful photo, Eleni, realized the mountain high above town, but partially obsecured by the house on left.
That's bring a thought about the POV chosen, which is OK - yet, to my humble opinion, I'd try a 4 or 5 meters to the right side, just to include more of the slope and the fort (?) on top's.
Fine used the light, colors were enhanced by.

A beautiful momument, more so to see the flag flying proudly alongside it! I like the way you have surrounded the monument with the town that gives this square its character, but this does not take any emphasis at all away from the monument itself which still has pride of place in your composition. I like the light here, early evening or early morning? Lovely result, and a very interesting note, thank you!
