Theater of Epidaurus, a photo from Argolis, Peloponnesus

Photographer's Note

According to mythology, this place was born Asclepius (Aesculapius) son of Apollo and Coronis, a princess of Boeotia. Asclepius was fed by a goat and educated by the centaur Chiron. He became so skilled a healer that he even raise the dead and destroyed by envy Zeus with a thunderbolt. No one knows exactly the time when the cult began to Asclepius in Epidaurus. Excavations have unearthed buildings for worship and Mycenaean protohelénico home at Mount Kinortion.

In the seventh century BCE Epidaurus was a thriving city of some importance, faced with Argos and ally of Sparta. The period of greatest splendor of the sanctuary was in the fourth century BC The miraculous healings drew people from around the Mediterranean and elegant buildings built. The fame of Epidaurus declined gradually in the imperial era, with the advent of Christianity.

The theater notorious for its acoustics since antiquity, was built in the fourth century BC by Polykleitos the Younger, on the slopes of the hill. It is best preserved theaters of Greece and is perfectly integrated into the landscape, has a grandstand of 54 rows and can contain up to 14,000 spectators, the orchestra circular rammed earth as the Greek model, kept in the center of the base of the altar Dionysius, the actors had access to it through side entrances, visible on the sides. The scene now defunct was surrounded by 18 Ionic columns of which only the foundations remain. Worth seeing the landscape that is offered from the top of the bleachers.

Según la mitología, en este lugar nació Asclepio (Esculapio) hijo de Apolo y Coronis, una princesa de Beocia. Asclepio fue alimentado por una cabra e instruido por el centauro Quirón. Se convirtió en un curandero tan hábil que incluso llegó a resucitar a los muertos y Zeus por envidia lo destruyó con un rayo. No se sabe con exactitud la época en la que se inició el culto a Asclepio en Epidauro. Las excavaciones han sacado a la luz edificios para el culto de origen protohelénico y micénico, en el monte Kinortion.

En el siglo VII a.C. Epidauro era una ciudad marinera de cierta importancia, enfrentada a Argos y aliada de Esparta. El periodo de mayor esplendor del santuario se produjo en el siglo IV a.C. Las curaciones milagrosas atraían a gentes de todo el Mediterráneo y se construían edificios de gran elegancia. La fama de Epidauro decayó paulatinamente en la época imperial, con la llegada del cristianismo.

El teatro notorio por su acústica desde la antigüedad, fué construido en el siglo IV a.C. por Policleto el Joven, en las laderas de la colina. Es de los teatros mejor conservados de Grecia y esta perfectamente integrado en el paisaje, tiene una gradería de 54 filas y puede contener hasta 14.000 espectadores, la orquesta circular, de tierra apisonada según el modelo griego, conserva en el centro la base del altar de Dionisio, los actores accedían a ella por medio de entradas laterales, visibles a los lados. La escena hoy desaparecida estaba circundada por 18 columnas jónicas de las que solo quedan las bases. Vale la pena ver el paisaje que se ofrece desde la parte más alta de la gradería.

Impresionante vista...muy bien compuesta y con una luz y colores tremendos...tiene algo de HDR??? Porque si es así has dado con un punto muy bueno, lejos de esas imagenes en que el efecto es excesico. Muy buena la idea de enmarcar con el arbol, dando buen contrastes encuanto a luz y color...Me gusta mucho...

nice the synthesis with the tree and the side entraces to create a beautiful and different view of the famous Theater of Epidaurus.I like the branches of the tree on the upper part of the image with the brilliant light to enhance the vivid colours of the scene.

Hola Luis,
The old Theatre built with a good environmental thinking: It's outlines coincide with the hill's slop on background's, and probably this added a good acoustics for the spactators.
Fine outlines, good clear details and people gave scale to the magnificent place.

Hola Luis,
A real original way to present us the theater of Epidaurus. The picture includes other elements as the entrance gates at both sides, the big tree which trunk and branches make a good framing, and the abundant green on the top of the theater. Nevertheless the tribune with 54 rows of seats - that usually are photographed - look very impressive. Probably because we are able to judge its size thanks to the surroundings and also to the many visitors.
Very good composition, sharpness and light management. Beautiful colours.

un lugar que jamás había visto. muy hermoso este encuadre con ele portal de lineas retas y las sillas del teatro allá, junto al verde. muy buen uso de las ramas de grande árbol y buena luz. gracias por compartir.

What a splendid pov you chose, using the tree, almost silhouetted, to frame the ruins; it adds f/g interest and a sense of depth. Your dof works well, capturing all the interesting details sharply, in the well composed shot.

estas milenarias piedras todavía nos hacen imaginar el esplendor de aquella antigua cultura griega, y en este encuadre las podemos apreciar con toda su belleza y con su magnífica factura arquitectónica.
Me gusta cómo has combinado con gusto el verdor de los árboles que abrazan las gradas, y el buen efecto gráfico que nos ofrecen el pórtico y el árbol en el primer plano.
Luz, sombras y colores a un gran nivel, que dan una alta calidad a la composición.
Bonito marco para completar un buen trabajo.

Must be a great historic site portraying part of the amphitheatre which has pervasive air of tranquillity and charming feel to it. A well captured slice of local flavor here and enjoyed the views you have shared. This is the sort of thing I find very attractive. Your pov is good and creative as the view offers great depth and good natural framing inviting the eye to the main attraction. Pin sharp, fine clarity, coloring and some exquisite work done here. nice note about this place. I didn't know this mythology character Asclepius. The place has the magical of the ancient Greece, love this kind of architecture.

Yo estuve sentada en sus gradas y la acustica es perfecta
Muy buena composicion con el arbol como marco y el anfiteatro al fondo

Sabes que el color rojo de algunos prendas de los turistas ayudan a dar un muy buen contraste
Por la fueraza de la luz parece una foto tomada cerca del mediodia
