A great idea for a daily trip, or a weekend away from Athens into the idyllic natural landscape, is a visit to Lake Tsivlou. It is one of the recently formed lakes in Europe, located in the prefecture of Achaia, surrounded by the slopes of Mount Helmos which is abundant in diverse vegetation.
This alpine lake at 800m of altitude is 180km away from Athens and it is well worth your time for an excursion. To make your life easier you should rent a car, preferably a 4x4 in case you want a taste of the vast off road network around Helmos. Once you get there it is likely that you shall want to see as much as possible of this pristine natural landscape.
Lake Tsivlou was created as a result of a natural phenomenon. A massive landslide occured in 1913 and according to people's testimonies the signs were frequent earthquakes with magnifying intensity. Silyvena village was abandonned due to its imminent destruction, Tsivlos was partially covered with huge quantities of water.
