Photographer's Note
The monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary)Spilliani twinned with the monastery of Agia Georgios(St.George) is situated on the hill behind Pythagorion.
There are 94 steps down into the cave and a short walk takes you to the church.Three hand made tanks collect the water that slowly drips down through the cracks in the rock. The darkness together with the sound of dripping water, which is the only sound heard, creates a very special and emotive experience for any visitor.
It seems that the Virgin Mary's Cave has been a place for worship since ancient times, remnants of vessels and pitchers from the 5th century B.C. have been found in the cave.It is also thought that the cave was a place of refuge for Pythagoras as well as the residence of th sibyl Phyto(a witch from antiquity).

Hi Marion,
Congratulations on your well written notes & beautiful photo of the monastery.
Everything is so old & primitive & I would imagine cold inside the cave.
I would like to wish you & your family '' A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS '' with much love & good health in the New Year.
Kindest regards,
Dawn.
