[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It is difficult to know how and when this tradition started in Vrondados. Today there are many different versions of the story. I will tell you two of them.

The first version tells a story that this comes from the 19th century, when the Ottoman occupiers confiscated the canon over fear they would be used in a uprising. So locals resorted to fire rockets instead. This became the traditional annual Rocket War.

The second story states that this tradition was born during the turkish occupation. People from the island were prohibited to celebrate Easter the way they were used to. The Christians from the churches of San Maria and San Marco decided to have a fake war with rockets to keep the Ottomans away. Indeed, the Ottomans were frightened by the sudden violence. They kept a safe distance while the rockets were fired. In the meantime, the communities could celebrate Jesus’ resurrection in the churches.

This is two different versions that the local people told us during the Rocket War.

Ο ρουκετοπόλεμος είναι ένα παλιό Βρονταδούσικο έθιμο που έχει τις ρίζες του στους χρόνους της Oθωμανικής κατοχής. Οι Βρονταδούσοι για να συμμετάσχουν κατά εντυπωσιακότερο τρόπο στο χαρμόσυνο εορτασμό του Πάσχα, καθιέρωσαν το φαντασμαγορικό τούτο έθιμο. Οι ρουκέτες αντικατέστησαν τα κανονάκια και τα όπλα «σουρντάδα» παλαιότερων εποχών. Κατά τα χρόνια της τουρκοκρατίας, η γόμωση των κανονακιών γινόταν με μπαρούτη, με ισχυρότατες εκρήξεις. Το 1889 οι Οθωμανοί έκαμαν κατάσχεση στα κανονάκια, επειδή φοβόταν μήπως ο εορτασμός του Πάσχα δημιουργήσει προβλήματα γενικότερης εξέγερσης των κατοίκων του νησιού για την αποτίναξη του τουρκικού ζυγού.
Οι ενορίες του Αγίου Μάρκου και της Παναγίας Ερειθιανής προετοιμάζονται πυρετωδώς, μήνες πριν από τη Μεγάλη Νύχτα της Ανάστασης. Μεγάλοι και μικροί, που ασχολούνται με την κατασκευή των ρουκετών, εργάζονται με ταχείς ρυθμούς. Μετά τα Χριστούγεννα και πλησιάζοντας προς το Πάσχα, όλοι έχουμε δει κατάμαυρους από το κάρβουνο νεαρούς να επιστρέφουν στο σπίτι του.
Μεγάλοι μάστορες στην κατασκευή ήταν ο Θεόδωρος Καλαγκιάς του Σίμου με τις «γαλλικές» του ρουκέτες, ο Σίμος Καλαγκιάς του Θεοδώρου με τις «φιδίσιες» του, ο Σίμος Αθηναίος του Ζαννή και πολλοί άλλοι.

this is an awesome display. The red/orange fireworks are very attractive. Pretty image with very good details and colour saturation. It seems to me that your people had a good time celebrating Easter. I'm very happy for you all.
