Η προέλευση του ονόματος "ΜΑΥΡΟΚΟΡΔΑΤΟΣ" ή "ΜΑΥΡΟΓΟΡΔΑΤΟΣ" προέρχεται από δυο μεγάλες βυζαντινές οικογένειες, τους Μαύρους και τους Γορδάτους.
Στη Χίο εγκαταστάθηκαν γύρω στο 1570 και ανέπτυξαν εμπορικές και οικονομικές σχέσεις με τους Γενοβέζους.
Το Μαυροκορδάτικο κατοικήθηκε τον Γενάρη του 1736, και παρέμεινε στη οικογένεια Μαυροκορδάτου μέχρι το 1938, οπότε και δωρήθηκε στον Δήμο Χίου.
Σήμερα χρησιμοποιήται σαν Παραδοσιακός Ξενώνας, Εστιατόριο και Καφετέρια.
