From my summer holidays in Zakynthos Island
The loggerhead turtle (Caretta-Caretta) used to be common throughout Mediterranean, but its nesting grounds have been diminished, due to shore development; today this graceful swimmer is considered an endangered species.
Zakynthos is one of the last -and the most important- nesting areas in the Mediterranean for the loggerhead turtle.
The male turtle never leaves the sea but in the early summer the female comes to the south-coast beaches of Gerakas, Sekania, Dafni, Kalamaki, Laganas and Marathonisi to lay its eggs in the sand.
The young are hatched by the sun's heat and after 55 days crawl into the sea.
We found this turtle, after almost one hour searching, in the area of Laganas. Really this is a lucky moment.

Long life for this turtle! It is a beautiful specimen. Good capture, wonderful sea.

Oh wow, how cute! You were very lucky to spot this friendly little animal! Very nice blue colour of the water, nice light on the ripple of the water. Funny to see how it is swimming while the head is just above water level. The only thing I would have done different is cropping a bit closer.

The slight swell of the water above the turtle is a nice touch to include. Very nice photo!

Hi John. Nice catch of this turtle. It looks pretty big. You have timed the shot perfectly to capture it with its head sticking out for a breath. Of course the blue water is the icing on the cake. Nice shot John!

You must be indeed very lucky to be able to catch this turtle is such perfect position. I admire your handling of the water with such great varieties of tones and especially it's transparent qualities. The light penetrating the water is beautifully captured. Excellent shot!! Have a nice day.

Very well done, John.

A cool closeup of the turtle. I guess it must have been very difficult to get a clear shot of him considering the fact that turtles can swim very well. Good and sharp
Thanks for sharing

Hi John, A nice catch of the funny looking creature. I like the view of the turtle in the clear water, which makes a very clear view of the turtle paddle its way out. A well taken picture with rich texture and nice clarity.

How lucky you are to have observed this superb turtle in its natural element. I went to Zakynthos, several years ago, but I did not have time to search seriouly for them, so it's a little regret for me !
Your composition is nice and the turtle is sharp and well exposed. Thanks very much for sharing !

A simple, but perfectly tallied composition. I follow perfectly the movement of this sea turtle. A very rare catch.

An outstanding composition. The turtle is superbly placed in the frame and all the fascinating details are seen clearly. The exquisite water colour enhances, as do the shadows in the water. A most successful capture, John. Great work.

This is a greta photo! the sea water has a beautiful colors, and the turtle is nice.
Here in Brazil we have the same problem, because of the increase of the urban areas along the shore the nesting grounds for the turtles have been dimininshing, but there is an entity here that cares much about saving the turtles, they have an wonderful work here. That's quite interesting to know about it in Greece.

Yes...lucky magic moment! I love these turtles! I have seen some around the Eolian islands near Sicily myself! So wonderful..where you see turtles you get at least the impression that the sea is really clean. Great capture! Thanks, Léonie

Geia sou Yanni
If, one day, I manage to meet a caretta caretta, I believe that it will be the most beautiful souvenir of my life. How lucky you are! Thank you to make us participate at this big moment in this turquoise blue water. (I looked for it to Kefalonia and in Sicily, but I had no your luck! A day maybe...
