Cloudy Corfu, a photo from Kerkyra, Ionian Islands

Photographer's Note

Here you see large part of the old town of Corfu (declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO). You can see a small part of Spianada, the largest square of the Balcans, and the famous road called Liston, which in the Venetian dialect means the large "lista", a big straight road that is. Today is the best place for a walk or relaxing while enjoying a cup of coffee, in one of the many cafes you can find there.

Liston was made by the French, as a "copy" of the Parissiene Rue de Rivolli, by an engineer called Lesseps, father of the engineer who contstruct the Suez Canal. Most of the magnificent buildings that you see right beside the square were constructed during the years of the British "protection" of the island, and finally the last decades, the Greeks made a parking space, nearby :-))). So, we can say, that this road is something like an epitome of the Corfiot history of the last centuries: a "french" road, with "british" building and "venetian" name, where you can enjoy the national greek "sport", drinking coffee!!!

On the right side of the picture, you can see the belltower of Saint Spyridon (the one with the red "dome"), patron saint of Kerkyra. "Behind" the old town, you can see the New Fortress, constructed according to plans by the Venetian engineer, Francisco Vitelli, between 1570 and 1645. Photo taken from the top of the Old Fortress of Corfu, which is separated by the old town, by an artificial canal, called Contra Fossa.

This is a fantastic view of the beautiful city. The contrast of architectural styles is great with the more modern buildings in the foreground and the ancient fortress behind them. The threatening sky provides a great backdrop for the scene. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and DOF.

I will never be able to visit this list of Greek islands. Whenever i see a photo form them, i become unable to decide. Thus, the easiest way of overcoming my dilemma is never visitibg them, i guess...
The grains and "old" colors increase the postcard effect. The POV is amazing.
