Photographer’s Note

The first colours of Autumn have appeared and the housewifes all around Greece have started their preparations for winter. In central and northern Greece, the "dristelles" ("δριστέλες") or "nerotrives" ("νεροτριβές") are working full time, cleaning any kind of carpets, blankets and bockings.

What is a "dristella"? It is a natural, ecological "washing machine", where no chemicals or detergents are used to clean the items mentioned above. The water comes from nearby springs and falls from some height with full power and rush, creating a whirlpool. The power of wateR is so big that sometimes it takes 4 men to drag a blanket out of the wirlpool. Then, blankets, carpets and bockings are left to dry in places like the one you see in the photo. If you want to see what a dristella, with its whirlpool looks like, you 'll have to wait for my next photo.

This place is between the village of Aghios Georgios and the springs with the same name, on the northeast part of Preveza Prefecture, very close to the National Road that connects Arta and Ioannina. Very close to the springs you can see a very impressive ancient Roman acueduct, that was bringing water to Ancient Nicopolis (you 'll see photos of them both in the near future). Very close to this place, you can also find one of the most peculiar greek landscapes, called "Kokkinopilos"="Red clay" (***CHECK HERE***)
