Acheron river

The Acheron (Greek: Αχέρων) is a river located in the Epirus region of northwest Greece. It flows into the Ionian Sea in Ammoudia, near Parga.

In mythology

In ancient times the word Acheron was interpreted as ὁ ἄχεα ῥέων (ho akhea rheōn), meaning "the stream of woe", and it was believed to be a branch of the underworld river Styx over which in ancient Greek mythology Charon ferried the newly dead souls across into Hades. The lake called Acherousia and the river still called Acheron with the nearby ruins of the Necromanteion are found near Parga on the mainland opposite Corfu.
The word is also occasionally used as a synecdoche for Hades itself. Virgil mentions Acheron with the other infernal rivers in his description of the underworld in Book VI of the Aeneid. In VII, line 390 he gives to Juno the famous saying, flectere si nequeo superos, Acheronta movebo: 'If I cannot deflect the will of Heaven, I shall move Hell.' The Acheron was sometimes referred to as a lake or swamp in Greek literature, as in Aristophanes' The Frogs and Euripides' Alcestis. In Dante's Inferno, the Acheron river forms the border of Hell. Following Greek mythology, Charon ferries souls across this river to Hell.

Αχέρων ποταμός

Ο Αχέρων είναι ποταμός της περιφέρειας Ηπείρου και διασχίζει τους Νομούς Πρεβέζης Θεσπρωτίας και Ιωαννίνων. Οι πηγές του βρίσκονται στο Νομό Ιωαννίνων, στο όρος Τόμαρος, σε υψόμετρο 1600 μέτρων και κοντά στο χωριό Γλυκή. Εκβάλλει στο Ιόνιο Πέλαγος, στο χωριό Αμμουδιά του Νομού Πρεβέζης, όπου σχηματίζει Δέλτα από το οποίο διαμορφώνονται τα δύο κύρια έλη της περιοχής, το έλος της Σπλάντζας και της Βαλανιδορράχης. Ο Αχέροντας λόγω της παράδοσης και της περιβαλλοντικής αξίας προσελκύει πλήθος επισκεπτών από τις πηγές έως και τις εκβολές του. Το μήκος του ανέρχεται στα 52 χιλιόμετρα ενώ από τα νερά του αρδεύονται περίπου 85000 στρέμματα,εκ των οποίων 28000 βρίσκονται στο Νομό Θεσπρωτίας και 57000 στο Νομό Πρεβέζης. Εναλλακτικά ο Αχέροντας ήταν γνωστός και ως Μαυροπόταμος, Φαναριώτικος ή Καμαριώτικο ποτάμι.

beautiful capture with fine colors, this way i´ve walked several times, really a cold water even in the hot summer times, but a lovely location and worth to visit it several times..

This river must have, or once had, much wilder moods than the placid beauty shown here. I really like the way you framed the river curving into the trees while the waders add a nice focal point. I also like the contrast between the rocks and the verdantly green trees.

Beautiful river and on such a sunny day, it looks very refreshing and inviting for a nice stroll and dip our feet in it after a hike. Very strong light creating very strong contrast, perhaps the shadow is almost too dark, but it bring out the color and light on the green leaves and river very well. Great composition and POV. Hello Danos,

you choose to photograph a famous river indeed! Anyone who studied Dante or Virgilio knows about Acheron, and recently I read and interesting book of Tim Severin who did the same journey as Odysseus in a replica boat and visited the mouth of this river... but it's a long story...
The transparency of these waters and the intense green colour of the trees are the main and best features of this photo. They create a sense of freshness and vivacity and of course the people make the scene more alive. Beautiful summer light and wonderful colours: a simple but effective composition which conveys a nice mood.

It must be great pleasure to walk this shallow water in the middle of sunny day. The light is amazing and helps to show all details in very good sharpness. Hi danos,

The presence of the persons has an effect of scale. The reflections in the water are assets to the composition. The trees are framing well the river. The point of view lead our eyes toward the rock formation which is giving perspective to the photo. The light has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.

Wonderfully clear river is framed beautifully by the lush green trees linning its banks.
The vivid blue sky contrast brilliantly with the trees and lets in bright light that brings soothing shadows below.

Pour une rivière des Enfers, elle semble bien inoffensive et bien claire. J'aime la belle lumière de juin sur l'eau et les arbres. Le ciel bien bleu achève de belle manière le paysage.

Hey Danos,

I bet the stream is cold. The colors mingle nicely and I can feel the beat of the place. Nevertheless it feels just a bit on the soft side and would benefit from some sharpness perhaps. Otherwise a likable motive.

Hi Danos,

Recently I was in some mountains in Western Spain where I did a small hike in a stunningly beautiful valley whose translated name is "gorge of the hells" and, like here, I wondered why "in hell" they had the idea of associate hell with such beauty.

It's very well framed, with the point of fugue of the river slightly off centred and with the trees composing a "X". People give a pleasant sense of human life and that red shirt makes a striking contrast. I notice that the light was extremely harsh and that seems to have caused some disturbance, not only in the high contrast, but also in the clarity. Nevertheless, it's remarkably well exposed considering the situation and overall, it's a very attractive image.

I agree with all those who praise the natural beauty of this river (actually it seems to be rather a brook) but I was really astonished after reading your note. This time the mytology has overwritten the nature for me, by the way in connection with a perfect photo.
